Bear and I just got back from working the Hollywood Collectors show with his mom. Bear has the true gift of gab - he can talk to anyone about anything, anytime. I, however, seem be the opposite; it seems no matter how hard I try my conversations are just off. It's like I can't tune in to everyone else's rhythm, I'm always half a beat off. Any one else ever have that feeling?

Re: Gift of gab - or not
Karla, you AND Annie have the gift of gab!!
I don't... with people i know really well and am comfortable with then YES but people I kinda know or strangers... No way. It sucks. I hate it. I wish I could talk to people.Good morning, son
In twenty years from now
Maybe we'll both sit down and have a few beers
And I can tell you 'bout today
And how I picked you up and everything changed
It was pain
Sunny days and rain
I knew you'd feel the same things...

Re: Gift of gab - or not
I used to be that way, but working in customer service for so long kind of cured me of that.
You can become super-confident so that your opinion is heard, and you become the centre of the conversation. This just takes a lot of practice really. You don't have to be arrogant, or even intersting, you just have to be likeable most of the time.
However, even the most confident person sometimes still feels like a fish out of water sometimes. The trick is not letting on that you feel that way.
I started a new job this week, and everything here is completely new to me. So I tried to relate it to stuff I already knew from my old job, thought of it in those terms, and suddenly I felt more confident about what I was doing. I was able to freely joke and introduce myself to people, and never felt as though I was 'one step out'.
It just takes a little time to learn the art is all.

Re: Gift of gab - or not
When at work and talking with clientele I can talk up a storm and make people feel very comfortable in a matter of minutes.
When I meet new people outside of work I tend to be a lot quieter. I like to listen more than talk in those situations. Not sure why. Maybe because I get paid to talk at work and I need to give it a rest when outside of work.
It wasn't me, it was Lisa!

me ..Hi hon, looks like you have a big job keeping the park clean, your job is hard and I want to say thank you......
CM.. wow, no one has thanked me before.. its a hard job some times !
Me.. yes I know I have seen what people can do, but I am grateful there are people like you who do a good job.
CM..... oh let me tell you how my day is some times........
we talked for 20 minutes until Anne came out ot the store and she was amazed I was having this big discussion with a cm cleaning gal.
talking is easy, its listening thats really important. some people really want to talk but do not know how to open up
just start a conversation, it will go from there
