  • Help, my hours were cut!

I know most of you can sympathize with this plight... I love my job. I love it more than any other job I've ever had. But they just cut my hours. I'm working 8 hours next week, and a person simply cannot live off of that! In fact, they're cutting back everyone's hours, so picking up an extra shift just isn't in the cards. I DON'T want to quit, but how can I find a second job when my hours change week to week and because of my leg injury I have to have a job that lets me sit? No one's *that* flexible!

    Somebody help me!

Hugs! I know that won't help, but that's all I can do!

Sometimes it's very difficult to correctly express what you are trying to say in a message board format. People have their own ideas, misread what you are saying and you end up sounding like a heartless SOB. I'm afraid this is going to be one of those posts....

Work is not supposed to be fun. That's why it's called work. If you can get a job you love that pays the bills and otherwise fits your life then great but that's the exception not the rule. You have had your time with a "fun job" but if it's not working for you then it's time to move on and find something new. Perhaps you will learn to love it, perhaps not but staying with a job that you love but which does not pay the bills is a sure road to disaster.

I would suggest you stay where you are while you look for another position. Then once you have that locked up, you go back to your present employer and say: This is not working for me. I really need more hours, if I can't get them then I will have to move on.

www.craigslist.org is typically a good place to start a job hunt. Best of luck to you.

I know this seems awful to you right now, but I bet there are other jobs that are flexible and would allow you to sit. They may not pay great , but at least some pay is better than no pay.

Have you thought about going to a temp agency like Manpower? Maybe they can help you find something!

Good luck! Sorry this happened to you!

I also agree about the temp agencies. Before I worked fulltime, temping kept a roof over my head, and also gave me time and flexibility needed to find a better permanent job.

I wish you all the best! :squeeze:

I'm sure you love your job. But with that passion for what you do, and the experience you have gained there, can you not work at a similar place part time, or even fulltime, if another place has the work? I'm sure they could use your skills and talent, and allow you to earn a living as well.

Re: Help, my hours were cut!

Have you talked to the boss? Tell them you love the job, and don't want to have to leave. Remind them (gently) it costs much more to hire and train new than using a motivated and dedicated employee (that's you-right?) Ask if this is a short term down turn. Find out if they want you to do extra cleaning or organize the stockroom. There's lots of ways to "work around" work shortages. Ask them to put you on the top of the "on call" list.
Those things will send the right message...unless they're trying to get you to quit. Sometimes we reduce hours of people who we don't want anymore, and don't have cause to fire. If that looks like the case, find out where you stand-ask for a performance review. Then on the shift/s you have, blow them out of the water with hustle, effort, and service.

Re: Help, my hours were cut!

Sometimes the job you love still isn't the right job for you. You have to live and if this job isn't giving you what you need (A LIVING) then maybe it's time to move on.

I LOVE my job ... but honestly it's getting to the point where I might have to travel more. This creates a HUGE stress at home because I don't like being gone. So even though it's the best job I've ever had, the best boss I've ever had ... I'm thinking of applying out next year.

                          It's called life.

                          But hugs are good too!!!

Just a thought: why not check with central casting about picking up some hours at the resort. Let them know your situation. Since you are already a company employee, they may be able to help you since they are short staffed at the parks.

Yea, that's what I was going to say. It seems over half of the regular Fantasmic! crew comes from Travel Company and that can even bring in major overtime. Like this past weekend where scheduling didn't plan for Fantasmic! on friday so a ton of people were basically being begged to work with a ton of overtime.

The part that became a bummer for them though is that even after raking the CM's in, the 9:00 pm show was cancelled due to rain and the 10:30 show was really watered down (No Columbia stunts, etc...).

The other thing I'd say is see if there's a way you can apply for a salaried position. I know when I originally went from hourly to salary, I hated it, but nowadays I just can't see myself going back. Being salaried, I always know exactly how much money I have coming to me every 2 weeks, so I can plan with that financial security in mind. Yes, there are downfalls; like I ended up being woken up this past saturday at 7:30 am to deal with a work emergency and some weeks I end up working 60+ hours; but most of the time I have the flexibility I need in my daily life to pursue my dreams and I don't have to worry about having enough money to pay my bills at the end of the day.

Craigslist may be tedious, but it's a godsend. It's where I've found my last 3 jobs and I have no complaints (except for noone buying my old car which I posted on there months ago, but that's beyond the point...).

Re: Help, my hours were cut!

First of all, thank you so much everyone for the advice and love and hugs... It's really wonderful to know that such awesome people care about me.

Secondly, I am much more calmer now... I'm rallying my resources. I may get a very flexible part time gig as a karaoke deejay, as well as a customer service gig if the hours are flexible enough. I have tried temping before, but apparently I didn't have enough experience to get hired. (They wanted like, a year's worth of secretary work or something...)

And yes, they do offer Travel CMs shifts in the park, but since I can't do all that standing (stupid leg problem), I can't work them. There really aren't too many jobs in the park I can transfer to that would allow me to sit and give me the same pay rate for good hours, unfortunately.

And for the record, I don't just love my job because it's fun. There's a lot of it that isn't fun. It's also that I'm working with some of the best people I've ever come across, the perks are wonderful, and I could really use the medical benefits if/when I do go full time. And I really do enjoy making magic happen for people (like all of you).

I am going to look on craigslist. I'm not sure what skills I can offer, but I'm going to try. I'll keep you posted (presuming that you all do want to know that my work situation is back under control). And again... thank you all for the wonderful suggestions. I adore you all more than I can say. It's amazing to have such a great support group. ^_^

Go find a temp agency, and explain you need to find an office setting that allows you to sit. Almost all office positions are mainly seated. In addition, you are more likely to make a higher wage working in an office than in retail or other fields. A good bonus, with few exceptions, office hours are pretty much set, most offices don't have changing shifts.

                                  Good luck.
