  • Hawaiian Barbecue

Hawaiian Barbecue places have been popping up all over the place up here in the Bay Area, mostly L&L and now a place called Ohana. I personally love their food. Good BBQ is good BBQ regardless of where it comes from, but their system of the box lunch is very simple and very tasty. My only complaint is most places have the exact same menu and there is very little difference in taste of the basic things (mostly taking everything from L&L), though we used to have a small place called just Hawaiian Drive Inn that had much better macaroni salad then L&L.

So any of these around you? What's your opinion of the food and this new trend that seems to be starting?

Great food for the most part...especially the chicken and rib platters...I tend to like L and L the best but in our immediate area there's an L and M, L and Q, it gets rather confusing... Seems like this is the new trend for franchises now that the "Fresh Mexican" (Baja Fresh, La Bamba, etc) seems to have gone out of style a bit...

Mmm... Kalua pig... It turns me all Homer inside.

We had kalua pig at our wedding (we chose a great big, hula dancers and drummers with real Hawai'ian food luau instead of anything traditional) along with Huli Huli chicken, salad, noodles and haupia and we still, after a year and a half, get compliments on it. Hawai'ian food is oh so good. I'd love to see more places serve more island food, but only if they do it right. It'd be a shame if cheap, Taco Bell level Hawai'ian became prevalent and people got the wrong idea of it.

A new L & L just opened down the street - the first in our area I think. We've not yet gone in.

What exactly is Hawaiian BBQ? Like what's on the menu?

I think Hawaiian BBQ and L&L are the same franchise.

L&L has pretty much set themselves as the dominant Hawaiian BBQ place, deservingly so. But there is a few others cropping up, like Ohana.

What I've read it described as is a mixture of traditional Hawaiian food, Japanese food and American BBQ. Most of their food is a style of "plate lunches" with some kind of main dish (BBQ chicken/beef/ribs, friend seafood, kalua pig, etc), two scoops of rice and a scoop of simplistic macaroni salad (pretty much just mayo and mac)

LOL I'm sorry I misread the original post.

Living where I live there is only L&L, some really small small knock off like L&Q and Zippy's.

L & L is very good at first. After while I get tired of it. A lot of the items taste very similar. Can't say it's one of the first places I choose to eat at.

The Baja craze has definitely died. Went to Baja Fresh last night and it was deserted. 6 PM on a Friday night usually isn't as dead as it was in there. Food suffered too, not as good as it used to be.

And as I type this and shamefully bump my own thread, I'm eating L&L for dinner

I'm a sucker for good BBQ. Too bad there aren't any in Florida!

Funny this thread came up as the other night I was watching $40 a Day on Food Network and Rachel Ray was in Hawaii and they were talking about plate lunches like this.
