  • Personal names...

With how many members we have now, I think it would be best to quit using personal names in the open forums.......What do you think?

I know that the Wolfpack would like to be refered to as Wolfy, Wolfette and Mr.Lightyear.
Mom, remember, it's not what a person is like on the outside that counts,
it's what they are like in their HEART!

    I think it's a good point Wolfy.

I do my best to remember to just refer to anyone whose names I know as their username or username initials out of general respect for them out "in public".

Unless their name is in the username. Like me. Or Matt.

I personally do not like when my real name is mentioned in posts.

I strictly use screennames in the open forum, even if the person routinely uses their real name. In PMs or emails its fine, but in the open forum I try to never do it.

yeah, I know...not many know my real name. That's why when i see it, it makes me pause for a minute. It doesn't make me mad. I just don't know why me real name is being mentioned on the public board.

I think that each individual should make it clear what their preference is. I don't think there is any danger in calling anyone by their first name at all.

Let's take the name Matt, for example. According to the web site howmanyofme.com

There are 57,349 people in the U.S. with the first name Matt.
Statistically the 723rd most popular first name.
More than 99.9 percent of people with the first name Matt are male.

                Only 57,349?

Wow, I would have thought it'd be a much higher number.

But I'm bad at stuff like that.

                  Great idea (and reminder) Wolfy!

And another Happy Mother's Day to ya!

Which also shows how very confusing a strong use of personal names could become.

I don't like using personal names on any boards simply because not everybody knows them. Many people share names, too. It's just a lot easier to use the name everybody sees.

That's a cool website! There's only 8 of me with my name and married name. There's 44 of me with my first and maiden name.

There's 20 of my husband and 60 of my FIL.

I'm surprised by how many people have my married last name. Almost 22,000 and no one knows how to pronounce it!

I would agree with you, except there are five million variations on the same name here. How many different Tinks, DisneyGuy, Goofy, yada, yada, yada names do we have here? Yah, tons.

I think it is all a matter of personal preference. Obviously, I don't mind having my name out there. I'm just not partial of handing out last names. If we start referring to each other by first and last name, then I'll get worried.

                              Re: Personal names...

I think the best argument in favor of using people's screen names is the uniqueness factor. There are thousands of Matts and Jennifers, etc., but only one DustySage, Wolfy999 or Morrigoon.

Actually, I'm quite accustomed to people calling me by my screen name in person. IRL, I find I either remember someone's real name or their screen name, rarely both.

Unusually and exceedingly peculiar and altogether quite impossible to describe...
