Is there a song that once you hear it makes you instantly sad? for me it's 'Under the Bridge" by the Red Hot Chili Peppers because it was on the radio when my mother called me to tell me my grandfather had passed away. Whenever its on the radio, I always have to change it.

    Re: Sad songs

There are many songs that do this to me.
    "Run" by Snow Patrol
"Skin and Atmosphere" by 36 Crazyfists
    "Fix You" by Coldplay
    "Baby Mine" from Dumbo.
The list goes on and on.
"I, not events, have the power to make me happy or unhappy today. I can choose which it shall be. Yesterday is dead, tomorrow hasn't arrived yet. I have just one day, today, and I'm going to be happy in it. "Groucho Marx

Fix You by Coldplay will make me cry sometimes if I'm not in the greatest of moods and I hear it. Can't help it, it's a really beautiful song.

Other songs are Louis Armstrong's "It's A Wonderful World", "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" (there was one live version Judy Garland did of this song before she died and her emotion she puts out in her performance is really heartbreaking.) The other recent version of this song performed by the Hawaiin guy is also sad. I remember watching ER recently from when Dr. Green died of the brain tumor in Hawaii and they played this song.

"I Can Only Imagine" - the Amy Grant version

Amy Grant's version of this song came out like 2 weeks before my Grandma Ginny died - on June 5, 2002.

The week we prepared for her funeral, I listened to it alot.....and in my mind, I could see my Grandmother the way she looked, maybe around her high school graduation in 1937....dancing in a heavenly meadow......I know it sounds silly.

The song doesn't make me sad makes me happy.....but there was a time when I heard it and I would miss her much.

That Sunday, That Summer - Nat King Cole (my all time fave singer)

It Was a Very Good Year - Frank Sinatra

            Blue Velvet - Bobby Vinton

God Only Knows - The Beach Boys (I attended their mother's memorial in 97...they played the record to start the service...I've always loved the song but now it reminds me of her)

The End Of The World - Skeeter Davis (a sad song anyway, popular when I was going through some troubled times as a kid).

Where Were You When The World Stopped Turning (that September day) - Alan Jackson

            that's it for now

God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.

This is a good one and I'll probably get in trouble for telling the story, but this one time I was sitting working on the computer and Simply Sabrina was watching tv. I hear her flipping through the channels...

Did you ever know that you're my hero,
and everything I would like to be?
I can fly higher than an eagle,
for you are the wind beneath my wings.

              I hear the clicking stop...

              I hear a sniffle...

              I hear another sniffle...

I hear her digging though her purse...

I hear her punching numbers on her cell...

Hello Linda, can I speak with mom?

              No, everything is all right...

Mom? Beaches is on and I just wanted to tell you I love you!

and then she bursts into tears!

              It was SO ADORABLY funny!

              Be controversial

              Be outspoken

              Be outrageous

              Just don't be boring

I second what Tui said. I think Johnny Cash's version of "Hurt" is sad.

I also think Green Day's, "Wake Me Up When September Ends" is also pretty sad.

My best friend was killed in Afghanistan 3 years ago. We listened to Pink Floyd religiously, have to turn the station when one of their songs comes on the radio. And no, we weren't stoners.

Cat's in the Cradle - Harry Chapin.

                    Incredible lyrics.

Josh Groban - To Where You Are

I can listen to it a thousand times and still cry everytime, which is why when my ipod plays it when i'm driving, I have to skip it. But it's so emotional and moving that I have to listen to it.

Newsong - The Christmas Shoes (although it's so over-played now at Christmas that i'm sick of it)
Press today is so concerned with cool vs. not cool that they're starting to forget good vs. bad. I'm not sure I'll ever be "cool", but I will always tirelessly strive to be "great". - Josh Groban

Hmmm. When I lived & worked in L.A. back in 1992 I had a co-worker who died by her own hand, and it fell to me to clean out her desk. She'd written some lyrics to "Under the Bridge" in her day planner:

                        Sometimes I feel
                        Like I don't have a partner
                        Sometimes I feel
                        Like my only friend
Is the city I live in
                        The city of angels

To this day it is a sad song for me.
