  • What's in YOUR picnic basket?

As time for the Hollywood Bowl concerts near, my mind turns to pleasant thoughts, like, "What will I bring to the Bowl this time?" So, for those going, or for those not going who like to think of these things.... what's in your picnic basket?

This week I'm keeping it on the cheap and all-American. My picnic basket (or rather brown paper bag with handles, since I can't afford the awesome red, white, and blue picnic baskets being sold at my local market) will contain fried chicken, macaroni salad, hawaiian rolls, and a couple cans of Coke. And hopefully Chernabog will bring either an appetizer or dessert.

Unusually and exceedingly peculiar and altogether quite impossible to describe...

I love the Hollywood Bowl! We have gone the last few times to see John Williams. (which reminds me, I need to get tickets for end of summer!)

I like to bring more finger foods, since I end up making a mess anyways. The deli section in the store is wonderful. A good loaf of Sourdough bread, fresh sliced deli meat, different cheeses, some pre-cut fruit, and maybe a little bottle of sweet wine.
Marge: Barnacle Bill's Home Pregnancy Test? Homer, shouldn't we have gone with a better-known brand?
Homer: But Marge, this one came with a corn-cob pipe!
Marge: [reading from the test box] "Ahoy, Maties! If the water turns blue, a baby for you! If purple ye see, no baby thar be!"
Homer: So, which is it? Blue or purple?
    Marge: Pink.
    Homer: D'oh!
Marge: "If ye test should fail, to a doctor set sail!"

TheGoon, your basket sounds perfectly patriotic!! Cold fried chicken, nothin' better!

I like the cheese and meat and crackers idea a lot too. Maybe add some fancy-type dips like a cold spinach in a bread bowl dip with some bread/crackers. OK now I'm hungry!

I wonder how bacon-wrapped asparagus would do if cooked in a saute pan instead of on a grill? I love the stuff, but all the charred veggie gets all over my fingers - and it's such a great finger food too!

We were fortunate to secure a "garden box" for the July 4th concert. For our group of four, we plan to fill our picnic basket (a Christmas gift from a couple years ago that originally contained a very large bottle of Grey Goose Vodka and some glasses) with take-out from Maggiano's Little Italy:
                  Large Maggiano's Salad
                  Rosemary Baked Chicken
                  Mushroom Ravioli
                  Steamed Broccoli
                  A couple bottles of Chianti

                  Our guests are bringing dessert.

We're in box 822, near the stage at the left. Drop by and say hello!
"Yesterday, a man walked up to me and said, 'Isn't it a shame that Walt Disney couldn't be here to see this?' and I said, "He did see this, that's why it's here."

Mmmmm, maybe a Riesling to go with some of that cut up fruit (especially chocolate dipped strawberries).

I love a good Riesling. That's what I meant by a good sweet wine! Yum!
