  • Need help with recipes for my niece

My 11 yr old niece is starting to show some serious interest in learning how to cook. I had an idea to compile some kid-friendly recipes along with some of my easier recipes into a cookbook for her and get an apron and cooking utensils for her for Christmas.

Does anyone have any recipe ideas? Cookbook suggestions????

If you ever get gold medal flour - there is an offer for an abc cookbook on it - it's great. Really fun, easy meals for kids to make - I have some fun ones as well, I'll try to find them.

Believe it or not, lasagna is easy to make.
You can buy the noodles that bake with the lasagna so you don't have to boil them before. The recipe is on the box.
I always use ricotta cheese but you can substitute with cottage cheese. (some people do...)

another that my kids like to help roll in the stuffing mix

            BIG AL’S CHICKEN PUFFS
            4 - 6 boiled Chicken Breasts
            1 pkg. Cream Cheese
            Mrs. Dash Original
1 small pkg of Stove Top Dressing
            1 Stick Butter
            2 pkgs. of Crescent Rolls
            Gravy:
1 can cream of chicken soup
            milk

Crush stove top dressing and set aside
Boil Chicken Breasts and cut off fat or yucky pieces. Grind or shred chicken to fine pieces. Add package of cream cheese and coat well with Mrs. Dash. Mix thoroughly.
Roll out crescent rolls. Place heaping spoonful of chicken mixture in middle of dough. Pinch ends of crescent roll together forming solid pocket.
            Melt butter completely in bowl.
Roll puff in butter and then in crushed stove top until puff is completely covered. Place on ungreased cookie sheet.
Bake at 375 degrees for 20 minutes or until top and bottom is golden browned.
To make gravy put 1 can of cream of chicken soup in pan and mix with one can of milk. Heat until warm. Stir constantly or gravy will scorch.

Awesome idea! There is NOTHING like getting a new magazine every month.. It's my favorite type of gift! I think your niece would love that DKat!

To live would be an awfully big adventure.

Better Homes and Gardens and Betty Crocker both make cookbooks for your neices age range. Here are some links. They both say up to age 12 so she may be a little old for them. I would try to find some in person to make sure they are advanced enough to allow her to practice, and be challenged at the same time.

I really like the Junior Cookbook. I checked that one out at target. It's got some fun illustrations and food names.

I told her I'd give her some of my recipes if she was really serious but I am thinking it would be fun to have a Christmas gift with a cookbook, one from me that i make and then a nice one. Then a utensil holder that says "K*******'s utensils" filled with all the things she'll need to bake/cook with, and an apron. I'm hoping if we make homemade pizza's this coming month when we see them, it will get her more excited about cooking. I might give her a couple recipes to try.......
