  • Our Lake Mead Trip

Good morning to all! Thought I'd give y'all a brief recap of our wild adventures this weekend at Lake Mead.

We left our house at just about 8pm on Friday and spent the next 5 hours in traffic. We got to our "resort" just after 1am, and I was immediately struck by how...um, outdoorsy our place was. I'm not a big outdoors person, and although we had a roof over our heads and some running water, THE ROOMS DIDN'T EVEN HAVE PHONES IN THEM! I couldn't believe that. In addition to the glaring lack of any communications devices whatsoever, there were many very big, very friendly bugs who were not afraid of us big old people. *shudders* I hate bugs. They're icky.

Saturday morning we were up at the crack of dawn to take the boat out for its virgin voyage. We left the marina and immediately ran aground on some shallow rocks not far away. My sister's fiancee and my stepdad had to get out and push us off of them, and we were finally on our way! Woo hoo!

We took the boat over to the Hoover Dam, and I was so amazed by how beautiful the water is in this area. Lots of huge rock walls on either side, and greenish blue water as far as the eye could see. We swam by the dam for about an hour, and then we set off to find a spot to set up for the day.

We found an awesome cove to make our own fairly quickly, it was so much less crowded than I anticipated. In spite of the heat, all 6 of us were able to set up our stuff in about 20 minutes time, after which we enjoyed some sandwiches. Then it was back on the boat to zip around the lake for a while. We got towed behind the boat on the ski bob for a while, which was so fun.

Dinner was a surprisingly good buffet at the only casino close to the "resort", the Hacienda.

Day 2 everything went pretty much the same as day 1, except for 2 notable exceptions:

    A) I tried waterskiing! I didn't do so good at it, but I did give it the old college try several times. I got dragged facedown in water a couple of times, which I strongly reccommend everybody try once. It's quite humbling.

    B) The most terrifying part of our trip (yes, even scarier than the bugs) came when we tried to tow Paige behind the boat strapped to a body board type dealie. She had her life jacket on, and she was strapped to the board on her tummy, and she was having a great time being towed behind the boat for maybe 10 minutes, before she completely wiped out in the water. As we brought the boat around in a circle, we realized she was still strapped to the board, and she was stuck under it underwater. I cannot describe the terror that went through my heart at this realization, and unless you have children you couldn't possibly know. I was stuck in an awkward area on the boat, but my sister was right up front and did this terrific baywatch style dive into the water to get to her. Luckily, Paige didn't panic at all underwater, and managed to get herself unstrapped by the time my sister hit the water, so all was well that ended well, but I was pretty shaken up nonetheless. I did manage to wait until I was back in the room by myself before kind of freaking out and crying a lot.

We left for home early Monday morning, and all was well until one of the brakes on the trailer sheared off about 30 miles outside of Baker. We had to stop and get situated, and it was kind of scary to spend the rest of the drive home with only one brake on the trailer. Then, 20 miles or so away from home, the same thing happened with the other brake. My stepdad was furious (this is a brand new trailer!) but we eventually made it home, a bit bruised and tired, but in one piece all the same.

Thanks, O-nut! It is so good to be back home, with my baby safe and sound. It's also quite nice to be somewhere where the temp is only in the 70's, not 112...Although the temp did drop to 105 at night.

Glad everything is okay. We've had one or two scary moments with our son, and that feeling of helplessness and panic is awful.

            Welcome back to civilization.

OMG sunnyg, I know that feeling too well. This wkd in my mom's pool there were so many people horsing around and my youngest, who is a non-swimmer and wears "floaties" had an air mattress flip over onto his head. He couldn't get his head up and I yelled "get the baby!!" No one knew what I was talking about; they hadn't seen it happen. I was there in seconds and he was ok; sputtering and surprised, but ok. I freakin hate that feeling.
I give myself very good advice, but I very seldom follow it.
That explains the trouble that I'm always in...

You and me both, Jenni. :!$#%: Nothing like some little near miss to make you realize how truly helpless you are in the face of fate.

Thanks for sharing your trip report

I am a parent too so I know that horrible feeling when your child was in danger and you witnessed it. It hollows your stomach out and your heart just doesn't seem to beat in the same rhythm for awhile. ::HUGS::

I am glad that she is okay though!

Thanks again to everyone, I know this is repetitive, but yes, it scared the bejesus out of me. So very thankful that everything turned out okay.

And yes, DK, she did exactly that: got out of the water and acted like it was no big deal. Amazing.

I guess it's moments like those that remind us how fortunate we are to have the people we love in our lives, and just how quickly those things can be taken away from us as well.
