Article from OC Register - July 10, 2005
Disneyland and its cultural impact - your thoughts

Next Sunday, Disneyland will celebrate its 50th anniversary, reminding us of stories and characters that infused American culture, as well as reflected it.

What has been Disney's impact on America's, even the world's, culture, in your view? And, has there been an impact in your own life and that of your family? What are the good impacts of the Disney story themes? And the questionable influences?

Walt Disney believed that "we have created characters and animated them in the dimension of depth, revealing through them to our perturbed world that the things we have in common far outnumber and outweigh those that divide us."

He believed that America's heritage and ideals, "our code and standards - the things we live by and teach our children - are preserved or diminished by how freely we exchange ideas and feelings."

His aim was that families could indeed exchange those thoughts and feelings at parks built not just for children, but for parents and grandparents as well. Including Hong Kong Disneyland, scheduled to open in September, there are 11 Disney theme parks on three continents.

Did he succeed in these lofty ambitions? Please send us your short essays of 150-300 words to letters@ocregister.com or other addresses listed on page 3. Deadline for copy is Wednesday, July 13 at 5 p.m.
I was thinking that us MiceChatters probably have a lot to share, so let's get on it! letters@ocregister.com! Feel free to post whatever you write here too. I would love to see what you all think.
