I think it's got some political reasoning behind it - why our Thanksgiving is earlier. We already have a day off in November - Nov 11, which falls on a Sunday this year, so we actually get Monday off. So since we have a holiday in November, I think the government decided to have a statutory holiday in October since there wasn't one, and, originally, our Thanksgiving was also in November - during the same week as Remembrance Day. At some point it was decided to switch it to October and celebrate the Harvest. The only provinces that don't get the Monday (today) off are the maritime provinces: New Brunswick, Newfoundland, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island. Here's more about it on Wiki:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canadian_Thanksgiving

I think there's talk of giving us a stat holiday in February now as there isn't one established yet in that month.

I'm not having turkey dinner until two weeks from now - that's the earliest my family can meet up. I think my parents are coming over this coming weekend and my sister just went down to Mexico for a couple of weeks so we won't be chowing down on turkey until she gets back.

He's not actually there right now (the wonders of long distance business meetings through email), but we have both been there in the middle of winter. It was 60* F below (wind chill) and the locals warned us not to go outside for too long or our lungs would freeze. This California girl had a hard time with that weather! Not sure I could get used to living in some place where I had to plug in my car in the winter. But the mountains were beautiful - we went up to Banff and stayed in the Banff Springs Hotel.

the difference between candian thanksgiving and american thanksgiving to me (well is of course diffent months) but in the states the after THANKSGIVING SALES.. dont have that in canada.. in canada there is the BOXING DAY sales (the day after christmas)... so that is usually the biggest shopping day in canada

It floats. Its usually on the first weekend of October after the first full week. Oct 1 fell on a Monday this year so Thanksgiving is on the following Monday (Oct 8).
