  • Disneyland Via Las Vegas

We started out our journey to Disneyland with a three day stop-over in Lost Wages.

We stayed at the Excalibur. While waiting to check in, that Louie guy walked by us and said hi. He is the entertainment there in the evenings. Our room was on the 23rd floor overlooking NY-NY. Great view!

We walked around the strip one day, and visited the M&M store as well as the Coke store. We have pics going back quite a few years with the kids sitting/standing next to the Coke bear. They grow soooo fast!

We had lunch at Planet Hollywood, where Stephen picked a fight with Rocky.

Later that night, back at the Excalibur, the kids "broke the bank" in the Arcade, while I got "broke" at the tables... Thankfully, we had enough cash left over to enjoy the Buffet for dinner. LOL

We enjoyed a special tour of Hoover Dam. As you can see from the pics, we had access to the bottom of the dam. There is a small tunnel which leads to the lower plateau from within the dam. It was too low for me to walk upright. I had to crouch down in order for my hardhat to not hit the top. Katie was able to fully stand up though. Once outside, I was able to straighten up. My back thanked me for that! One pic is looking straight up from the base. The other is looking straight down from the top. That tiny little walkway on the left with the railing is where we entered/exited the dam. We were hoping that no one decided to throw a coin (or worse) down while we were down there looking up! Ouch! What a view!

After our tour we went back to town and had lunch at the Hard Rock Cafe.

We also checked out some other resorts. The Palms, the Luxor, Bellaggio, etc... If you watch A&E, you might have seen the show "King of Cars". It is based out of Towbin Dodge. We drove there to see if we could meet "Chop" or the Blue Genie. No such luck that day.

We finished up our trip by blowing some coin at the Bass Pro Shops Outdoor World store. What a place!

Then it was south on the 15 towards Disneyland!

Glad you got to take the dam tour! (the only funny part in Vegas Vacation).

We have pictures with the bear too - I think it's a requirement if you visit vegas!

Sounds like you all had fun!

Haven't been up to Vegas in about 3 years. Used to have to go two times a year for conventions at work and it was a blast. So does the Coke store still have the small theatre that plays the endless loop of old commercials? I always liked watching those retro commercials.

So what kind of a dam tour was it? We didn't get to go anywhere like that one our tour, but of course that was almost 10 years ago. So was that pipe one of the bypass tubes? Great TR, thanks for sharing.
Stalking is when two people go for a long romantic walk together but only one of them knows about it.

              Great pictures.

In all our trips to Vegas we have never seen the Hoover Dam. I've been wanting to for years though.

                Thanks!

We've been to the Coke store the past couple of years, but we haven't seen any film room. But that is not saying much! We also went to the M&M store for about our fifth time and just this trip found out that they had a theatre and short film. It was cute for kids. So maybe the Coke store still has theirs. We did enjoy some of their fountain drinks. Coke Icee's as well.

The tours from 10 years ago were much better than the ones offered today. The public tours have been drastically reduced in exposure due to 9-11.

You can't pay for our tour. It was a special arrangement (work related). For obvious reasons, I couldn't take pics of certain things, and I can't post pics of other things that I did get pics of. Black helicopter type stuff...

The two tubes that lead to the plateau area are there just for that reason. Access tubes. No water passes through them. They lead to an interior maintenance area. VERY high security throughout.

The bypass tubes would be easy to walk through. They're about 50 feet in diameter! Actually, I have some other pics that I'll try to post that show the spillway and tube opening. My two sons said that they would be awesome skateboard opportunities! LOL

With the new freeways (VERY nice, BTW) the Dam is only about a half an hour from the strip.

                  It's an awesome sight!

Usually I'm too broke from hookers and too drunk from gambling to find the dam.

                    I hear it's pretty big.

                    No, really!

                      Re: Disneyland Via Las Vegas

I wasn't too impressed with the Excalibur when I last stayed there in 2003. I had visited 10 years earlier when it was brand new and liked it, but it just doesn't fit with the new style of Vegas hotels anymore. It's incredibly kid-oriented and the layout is kind of confusing.

I guess I miss the old non-corporate days of Las Vegas. With all these Indian casinos nowadays, there's isn't even much focus on gambling in Vegas anymore. Back before the Mirage opened, the Strip was where you went to go to Caesars Palace, Stardust and a few other places, but other than that it was a dump. And you could actually drive (loosely speaking) on Fremont Street and actually see the night sky if you were walking.

All these new condos and enormous mega-structures chip away more and more at what Vegas once was. It was a loud, smokey, visually distracting place to go to blow an entire month's paycheck. It's gone WAY too far upscale and the machines are much too computerized now...the sounds of coins dropping into the pan, ringing bells, money being dropped in, and robotic arms being pulled is gone. All you hear nowadays in casinos is the electronic credits being added up and "Wheel... of... FOR-TUNE".

                      Cool pictures though.

                          Well, we have four kids...

And we stay there for free, so the choice is obvious.

I certainly agree that the one-armed bandits are no longer as enjoyable as they used to be. No clanging of coins when you win. That was half the fun!

                          Glad you enjoyed the pics!
