2 dead, 7 hurt in series of pileups on 14 Freeway

By Andrew Blankstein, Los Angeles Times Staff Writer
    4:54 PM PDT, October 16, 2007

Two people died and seven were injured in a series of pileups today on the 14 Freeway in Lancaster, officials said.

The L.A. County Fire Department said the accidents occurred at 1:36 p.m. around the northbound 14 at Avenue B during what appeared to be a dust storm. TV images showed vehicles scattered about the roadway and in the median. Officials said that 15 vehicles, four of them big rigs, were involved in what was described as three simultaneous accidents. Both sides of the 14 are closed.

Officials reported seven injuries, including two patients in critical condition.

Authorities are still investigating the exact cause of the accidents, but said that gusty winds and poor visibility played a role. Around the time the incidents were reported, CHP officials had cited zero visibility along a stretch of Highway 58 due to high winds.

The Los Angeles County Fire department dispatched five engines to treat the injured and a hazardous materials squad to the scene to clean up spilled diesel fuel.
