  • need a museum suggestion

    Hi fellow MiceChatters,

The kids are going on a parentless vacation and wifey and I are kidless for a week. I have Tuesday off and would like to take her to a cool museum.

Any cool ideas? I know I'll probably have to drive to LA county to see a really good one. Thanks in advance for your suggestions!

    Chad

The Getty, but you need reservations. You pay to park, but the museum itself is free. The grounds are awesome. http://www.getty.edu/
        A signature should go here.

I second the suggestion of taking her to The Getty, Chad. The grounds are lovely and they have a lot of interesting things to see and do. I have been to all of Southern California's museums, and it's my personal favorite... they also have the most beautiful gardens that you can walk through... it can be very romantic i'd imagine... ... It's peaceful and secluded and just a lovely time...
I also enjoy the Huntington library... they call it a library but its more like a museum, again with amazing gardens and lots of things to enjoy...

Whatever you chose, have a lovely time with wifey!

I wanted to go to the Nethercutt Museum in May but ran out of time and didn't go. They have one of our Royal Hudson steam locomotives there from Canada. Looks like a fancy museum. Has anyone been there?

I went to FIDM to see this... but you may not want to see what they have on display now.

Huntington Library is nice. Plus it's close and the gardens are amazing.

Have you tried Warner Bros. yet? The museum is on the backlot, but to stand less than a foot away from the Maltese Falcon, well, you can't get any more Hollywood then that.

The Getty is the only museum I've been to in your area. Loved it. The grounds are glorious.

The Huntington is my favorite, closely followed by the Getty. You can't go wrong with either one. If you do choose to visit the Huntington, check the website for hours. They usually close early--e.g. 4pm or so.

Another suggestion (although not technically a museum): the Griffith Observatory.

Good idea on the Griffeth observatory. Haven't been there since I was 9! I'm going there soon but I gotta have the kids with me.

Lu and I really enjoyed the mummy exhibit at the Bowers Museum of Cultural Art in Santa Ana.

                                      http://www.bowers.org/

If you decide to go, don't miss the permanent exhibit of plein air art upstairs. We enjoyed that nearly as much as the Mummies exhibit:

                                      CALIFORNIA: THE GOLDEN YEARS
California, The Golden Years highlights the museum's spectacular collection of plein air paintings. This exhibit focuses on 56 landscapes, figure pieces and still lifes produced by California artists between 1875 and 1955, with most works coming from the period 1915 to 1935

Another place we really enjoyed was the Nixon Library.

                                      http://www.nixonfoundation.org/

The exhibits are fascinating if you are a history buff, regardless of where you stand on the politics of the day.

Okay, I am partial to this one as well, since I got married here!

Cool about the Getty not requiring reservations anymore. There have been a couple of time where I've thought about going and then didn't, due to it being short notice. That's great!
