NYC Marathon(pics) w/ Lance Armstrong

This past Sunday I watched 38,000 people torture themselves through 26.2 miles in the annual NYC Marathon.
Before the race I walked the last couple miles in Central Park.


On 59th Central Park South




There was a slight uphill just before mile 26 that I'm sure felt like a mountain to the runners.

Wheelchair athletes started at 9am and reached me shortly after 10:30. First man,

We posted up around 5th Ave and 59th for the runners. The women started at 9:30. 2hrs 18min later the front two women reached us.


Paula Radcliffe of Great Britain, who just had a baby nine months ago, won the race in 2hrs, 23min, 9 seconds. Gete Wami of Ethiopia was a close second.




third place finisher Jelena Prokopcuka with a time of 2:26:13.





The men front runners started at 10am. An amazing 2hrs later they passed us at an insane pace. These guys were running a consistant 5-minute mile!!




Martin Lel of Kenya won with a time of 2:09:04. Second place was Abderrahim Goumri of Morrocco at 2:09:16.

A five minute mile...amazing. Of course, I'd probably have an easier time running if I had 0% body fat and lungs the size of Manhattan.

He decided to do it again! I wonder how he did this year. Hopefully no shin splints like last year.

Lance Armstrong shaved 13 minutes off his 2nd NYC marathon. Lance finished 214th among the men in 2hrs 46min, 43 sec.
Last year Lance called the race "the hardest physical thing I have ever done."
Armstrong said he needed about four months to recover from the shin splints last year, when he finished 823rd among the men. This time, he trained more consistently and included faster 18- and 19-mile runs.









Katie Holmes also ran. She finished in 5hrs, 29min, 58 sec.


After 3hrs the course started getting crowded as 38,000 raced on.


I saw people completely break down from physical exhaustion and runners carried off the course by medical personnel.

This woman was forced to a walk and broke into tears

Wow you got some really cool shots, this is way more than I could ever run in a day, or a year fo rthat matter. What a great accomplishment for them...even having to walk at the end is huge for that long of a course.

Awesome pics Dan. I noticed that Katie was "beaming" for all to see and Lance looked pretty good.

I would rather just watch the run than partake. Just looking at your pictures gave me the chills.

No. There is a lottery. Its roughly 1 in 3 shot of getting a lottery spot. Or you can raise $$ and race for a charity. Or another way through NY Road Runners club(I think).

Honestly though, these people are awesome. I wanted to run a marathon so bad when I was younger and in shape and I regret not doing it. I think I would die if I did it now. Amazing.
I feel for the lady that was in tears when she had to walk.

I'm hoping to finish my half-marathon in 5hrs, 29min, 58 sec. But I don't know if I have the stamina to flash the high-beams the whole time.

Dan loved the pictures.. hubby wants to do this marathon. he is so out of shape right now.. last eyar was the first year he didnt do the LA marathon since it began.. this year he is gearing up for the vegas marathon at the beginning of december

I would some day love to do one. Have only done a 1/2 marathon back in vancvouer in 1999.. my time was 3 hours (pretty bad) but still alot better than what I would do now

That's the price one pays to be a world class racer, body fat is probably around 4% for some athletes, not too mention some of the women Ultra endurance sport athletes lose a a normal menstrual cycle. Not all have a normal life, it's eat sleep, dream, run, race.
