  • Cargo ship collides with Bay Bridge, spills 58,000 gallons of oil into the SF Bay

This happened yesterday morning, and it looks like it's going from bad to worse... Here's the original story..

CBS 5 / KCBS / AP / BCN) SAN FRANCISCO
    And here's todays update..

CBS 5 / KCBS / BCN) SAN FRANCISCO The Coast Guard says the oil that leaked from a cargo ship that bumped a tower supporting the Bay Bridge is washing up on beaches in Northern Marin County and as far south as Ocean Beach.

Authorities say some of the 58,000 gallons that leaked from the ship has traveled as far north as Gillon Beach on the Marin-Sonoma county line.

Oil has also been spotted on the shores of Angel and Alcatraz islands, Crissy Field and elsewhere.

Helicopter crews are surveying the damage, while skimming equipment is being used to suck up the oil and teams are walking the shoreline scooping up the oil.

Meanwhile, the pilot of this ship is being interviewed by Coast Guard authorities.

The oil spill has prompted the closures of at least seven beaches in San Francisco and Marin County - including Fort Point, Baker Beach, China Beach, Crissy Field, Rodeo Beach, Black Sand and Kirby Cove.

A Coast Guard official says there's no estimate of when the oil spill will be cleaned up.

Officials say there was no structural damage to the span in yesterday's incident, but about 58,000 gallons of oil spilled into the bay after a large gash was ripped into the hull of the ship called the Cosco Busan.

The Department of Fish and Game asks anyone who sees wildlife coated with oil or otherwise affected by the spill to call (877) 823-6926. Calls are also being accepted by the Oiled Wildlife Care Network, at (530) 304-1241.

    Experienced it first-hand.

It's crab season and the oil is moving right over the fishing grounds.

Plenty of boats that were out crabbing yesterday had to come back in right through the middle of it.

    What a mess!

Not to mention what that crud is doing to the environment...

Kinda. They take you to the Disneyland Hotel, give you a bunch of quarters, and see how well you're able to drive the remote controled mini-jungle cruise boats around.

Okay, I rarely actually do laugh out loud at a post but that one caused me to startle the cats with my boisterous guffawing. Hilarious.
