Well, yeah, wait a tic... Ventura's pretty long, and I've never followed Highland to the end. Granted, Katella starts in another county, but how far north does Ventura Blvd go? Could be it might reach Ventura County, for all I know.
Unusually and exceedingly peculiar and altogether quite impossible to describe...
Good morning, son
In twenty years from now
Maybe we'll both sit down and have a few beers
And I can tell you 'bout today
And how I picked you up and everything changed
It was pain
Sunny days and rain
I knew you'd feel the same things... sigpic
Here in Milwaukee the locals usually prounounce it MUH-waukee and everyone else says MILL-waukee! Also, it is fairly common to hear people who aren't from Wisconsin call it Wis-CON-sin and people from here always call it Wis-CAHN-sin. It's all in the WAY you say it. But, it's noticeable either side you're on.
Me, native to the Bay Area, raised in Sunnyvale, lived in for 13 years in the city before I had a mid-life crisis and moved here (and I plan on moving back somewhere in CA in 2007).
Northern California will always be home to me (from Santa Rosa down to Carmel is still Northern to me!) When I visit LA (which I absolutely love, BTW), Melrose is always Smellrose, so yeah, call me a tourista.

Sometimes even people who should be "local" can't pronounce stuff right. When we had the Paradise fire here last month even Johnny Mountain on channel 7 couldn't pronounce Morongo right... he kept saying Mor-ang-o instead of Mor-on-go. I wanted to kick the tv everytime he screwed it up. Even one of the reporters in Palm Springs couldn't pronounce one of our street names right, although for the life of me right now I can't think of what street name it was....
Yes! True sign of a tourist or someone who hasn't live here long is calling California "Cali" and San Francisco "Frisco". San Fransicso is just that unless you're there, then it is "The City".
THANK YOU!!! God I cringe everytime I hear someone say "Frisco"
But it USED to be Long Beach State. My sister went to Long Beach State. I still call it that once in a while.
OK. Those from outside the area say Cahuenga and Tujunga.
What do these three streets have in common: Katella, Sepulveda & Willow?
Where is Tin Can Beach? (I still call it that.) Or course I still say I'm in the Character Shop.
Highway 39 anyone? Harbor or Pasadena Freeway (11) Long Beach Freeway (7) Garden Grove Freeway, Newport Freeway, Riverside Freeway, Santa Monica Freeway. I don't eve know what is still used. I use them all. I like to confuse people.
Oh dear. The mind of a 43 year old native is on the loose.
Omg A girl after my heart!! i was soo BUMMED when they tore down hwy 39..soo many memories of what i used to do there (mostly bad) and those darn white cruisers they used to ride around to try and bust people! and good old Tin Can Beach..i havent seen or heard Bolsa Chica called that since my mom..
anyways we used to call Anahiem either Animal-heim or Ana-slime, and did anyone else call seal beach's Lesiure World Seizure World? Seal Beach was just Seal and does anyone remember the Australian Beach Club in the city in orange? or the rock n roll club in huntington Cant remember the name but it was next to the country nightclub...
anyways the only one i can think of from here is i will always pronounce the LOUIS in Louisville..but everyone from Ky says it like they are trying to bring up a giant Lung cookie..so sit and try to bring up spit enough for a loogie and say louisville at the same time..then you got it..sorry that the only way i could think of how to explain the prounciation.. and the freeway here is the tollroad, the swap meet is the flea market carbonated drinks are pops (that drives me nuts) LOL and a small valley is a "holler" boy i miss home! LOL
Locals/me: West LA Others: What the eff is West LA?
Locals/me: The Galleria Others: The Sherman Oaks or Glendale.. depending on where you are.
Locals/me: May Company, Robinson's, RobMay Others: Where's Macy*s?
This is coming from someone who has moves 12 times around Los Angeles, mostly through Culver City, Park LaBrea/Hancock Park, the Valley, Santa Monica/West LA.
Pico Neighborhood.. LIEK WHUT.
Well, light travels from the sun. Then, bounces off of our planet, and back into our eyes so we can perceive color. My body can intercept that light and dance around on it!
This one's pretty bad but I hear it all the time up here in refrence to SoCal ... Northern Mexico the other thing I hate is when I tell people where I'm from (Fountain Valley) they say, oh, is that in LA?? NO YOU FRIGGIN IDIOT!

Sacramento= SAC
Manteca= Manstinka (used to be a smelly sugar factory there)
Norcal - actually hate this"branding" of this area
Sincal- latest label of Norcal
Modesto- Methdesto, too many Meth labs in our county
Just too name a few
1st Amendment-Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.
TicToc, I thought it would be interesting to tell the story of how Modesto came to have it's name. Now, I'm going to get some details of the story wrong. But, the gist of it is that there was a man who helped the people in the town somehow and they wanted to name the town after him. He didn't want any recognition because he felt he didn't deserve it and so they named it modesto(modest in Spanish). At least that's what I've heard!
Anyway, I have a few others from here and Sacramento....here we have
Whitefish Bay aka Whitefolks Bay
West Allis(and yes it is spelled Allis not Alice) aka White Allis
Menomonee Falls(that's where I live) aka Monotony Falls
So, guess what, Milwaukee and the surrounding suburbs are the most segregated cities in the country...proven(sad) fact.
Alright, now for some Sacramento ones
Sacramento aka Sacratomato(I HATED that one!)
Locals=Sacramento
People from other parts of the country who think they're cool=Sac-town(I cringe still!)
And not to stir up any ill feelings...but, I'm still bitter about that damn Phil Jackson calling Sacramento a cow town!!!!!!
Well, I am from NY (the one and only city :lmao: ), and I admit- CA is Cali here :judge: Didn't know there was any other way to abbreviate. never heard of calling it CA . But I never heard of Frisco. It has only been referred to as San fran.
and don't forget my birthplace, Slimey (Simi) Valley.
But locals use those
No way! That's where I live.
I've heard Slimey, and as far as other towns in Ventura County (NOT 'the VC' thankfully), here are a few:
Moorpark: Kraproom (Moorpark spelled backwards)
Thousand Oaks: Thousand Jokes
Westlake Village: Worstlake
Oxnard: Oxnard
San Fernando Valley: SFV, The Valley, Hell, over the hill, etc [note: when Valley people say they're going over the hill, they usually mean they're going to the Westside (aka West LA) or Hollywood)]
when i lived in mobile alabama, they referred to the southern part of alabama as l.a. lower alabama. la people and the northern people have a huge rivalry thing goin on, and there are l.a. people who think that the north is too yankee for them and want to seced lower alabama from the upper. so weird! but it was strange to live in the real la, then go to the weird souther version of it
