The word 'niner' comes from airplane radios; way back when, they didn't have very good sound and 'nine' and 'five' sound a lot alike so they decided to use 'niner' for nine.
These days, the sound is much better and 'nine' is usually pronounced 'nine'.
Many years ago, I owned a plane with the number 7199P.....Seven One Niner Niner Papa.
