  • Luau recipes!

Okay...so not a REALLY real luau..but i'm giving a surprise party for a friend of mine on Saturday...she loves Hawaii & she has family there. I would love to incorporate some hawiian type food but keep it simple. I was thinking pulled pork sandwiches and sweet & sour meatballs.. anyone else have any ideas for appetizer type stuff? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated :-)

Not really appetizers but if you're just looking for quick & easy how about
Fruit Salad in served in a carved out pineapple or
    Fruit Kabobs
    Mango salsa
Macadamia nuts out in "coconut shell" bowls for snacking
Coconut Pudding(with toasted coconut on top mmmmm) or Coconut pie

Pick up some lei's and tiki decorations at a party supply store

Make a punch with pineapple juice, passion fruit juice seltzer and float pineapple sorbet on top

      Re: Luau recipes!

What about terriyaki on a stick? My family is Hawaiian and we ate this at least twice a week. I have only made it once, so I looked up a recipe and it came up with this. I have never seen or used the pineapple with it, but the rest is the same if you just left that out. Also, this says to broil it but my Dad always just threw it on the grill for a few minutes.

      INGREDIENTS:
      • 1 pound beef, cut in 1 inch cubes
      • 1 15-ounce can pineapple chunks with juice
      • 1/2 cup soy sauce
      • 1/4 cup brown sugar
      • 1 clove garlic, minced
      • 1/2 teaspoon minced ginger
      • 2 teaspoons sesame oil
      PREPARATION:
Combine all ingredients, including liquid from pineapple, and marinate, covered and refrigerated, 3 hours. Thread beef and pineapple alternately on skewers. Discard leftover marinade. Broil about 8 minutes, turning once, until beef is cooked.

If you want to be really authentic Hawaiian, you need to include Spam and macaroni salad.

Oh yeah baby!!! Hawaiian macaroni salad is THE BOMB!!!! We have a hawaiian bbq place in town (Ohana) that makes some awesome macaroni salad. I haven't tried their spam dishes (I don't eat pork), but the rest of their menu is de-lish!

Google "plate lunch" and enjoy. When Vic and I were in Maui, the plate lunch we had was the bomb. Oh yeah!

I wish I knew!!!! I can't quite figure it out, and I'm usually good at that kind of thing!

Its sweeter than regular macaroni salad, and I think it has shredded crab meat in it. No mustard, no olives, just macaroni and a sweetish white dressing that may or may not have crab in it.

I'll see if I can find a recipie.

                      Re: Luau recipes!

Here's one recipie that's CLOSE to what I've had (the salad I've had did not have peas or eggs in it):

                      Ono Macaroni Salad

This is a typical macaroni salad from the islands.

1 med. pkg. macaroni, or 2 boxes Kraft macaroni/cheese (only use macaroni)
                      1/2 lb. imitation crab (chopped)
                      1/2 box frozen peas (cooked)
                      2 sm. stalks celery (chopped)
4 large hard boiled eggs (grated)
                      1/4 tsp relish
                      salt/pepper to taste
1/2 chopped round onion or 2 chopped green onion (optional)
3/4 of a quart of Best Foods Mayonnaise as needed

Boil macaroni but do not over cook, drain & cool. Add all other ingredients to cooled macaroni then add the mayo. The macaroni will absorb the mayo, so you may want to make your salad a day ahead to let the flavors combine. You might also want to add more mayo just before serving. Enjoy! Serves 10-12

How exciting!!!!! You're such a sweet friend for doing this for her!

I haven't tried it, but I hear the kalua pork is really tasty. Its supposed to be an easy way to capture that luau pig roasting flavor!

Oh, I just thought of something! You're in the Monterey area, right? There's a Hawaiian BBQ place in Salinas, maybe you could pick up some dishes there. Here's their info from google: Aloha Hawaiian BBQ - 921 N Main St, Salinas, 93906 - (831) 758-8028
