  • Menstrual blood yields stem cells:

    Tuesday, 14 March 2006

Japanese researchers have harvested stem cells from human menstrual blood, a medical conference has heard.

The researchers say these stem cells could be coaxed into forming specialised heart cells, which might one-day be used to treat failing or damaged hearts.

At the meeting of the American College of Cardiology, Dr Shunichiro Miyoshi reported that he and his colleagues at Keio University in Tokyo collected menstrual blood from six women and harvested stem cells that originated in the lining of the uterus.

They were able to obtain about 30 times more stem cells from menstrual blood than from bone marrow, Miyoshi says.

The stem cells were then cultured in a way to induce them to become heart cells.

After five days about half of the cells contracted "spontaneously, rhythmical and synchronously, suggesting the presence of electrical communication" between the cells, Miyoshi says.

That is to say, they behaved like heart cells.

The researcher explains that already stem cells derived from bone marrow have improved heart function, mainly by producing new blood vessels rather than new heart-muscle tissue.

He emphasises that it is important that these cells be obtained from younger patients, because they would have a longer lifespan than cells harvested from older donors.

Heh heh... just kidding girls! :ghug:

Just think though... a renewable and plentiful resource of stem cells and none of the controversy of cloning or taking it from embryos. If this is true, imagine what medical science could accomplish!

:mob: Yea.. your should run!

But you're right... this does mean something totally new. But in the world of meds, I guess we'll have to wait longer.. especially since this came out of Japan and not the US.

Wow - I really hope something comes of this - I think that so much good can come from stem cells but the contorversies surrounding it has really slowed the progress

Fascinating. I guess it's logical, but wow.

Isn't it cool how your own body can do things that can eventually heal yourself or another? It's amazing how resourceful our own bodies are.

This is great news. I jumped at the chance to donate the cord blood when both the kids were born. I hope some people don't see this study as a way to joke around. Stems cell research has saved many lives, my cousin's included.
Anything listed on the park maps as an attraction is fair game for inclusion in the Rally.
I cannot confirm nor deny the inclusion of any attraction in the Rally.

My aunt had Luke Garret Disease (Is that how you spell it???) and could have benefitted from it but she passed away .

                      Lou Gehrigs (I think)

My cousin had the great fortune to be treated at the UC Davis Medical Center. He had an auto-logous stem cell treatment a couple of years ago. He has been given a clean bill of health. He even proposed to his girlfriend last week. Glad to see that he has a future to look forward to.

The girl who was diagnosed the same day he was supposed to have the stem cell treatment he had, but she passed away before she received the treatment.

IF it turns out to be true it will be a very important step. Stem cell research is vitally important to so many diseases and ailments that affect us. But even if they manage to harvest stem cells in this way it will still be years before all the research and testing is done. But at least its a start, and I hope that it pans out! In the end all of us can only benefit from the continuation of research into this field.
