  • Uh oh

I was so happy when I was appointed first chair clarinet by my band director. Until I realized that my best friend was second chair. Like all bands you can challenge someone in a chair above you for their seat. I don't know what to do! Any advice?
    Thanks FlAmAbLe

I think the question the user is asking is how.

If your friend challenges you, they challenge you. Don't take it personal. Just remember if at any point you get moved to second chair, the director is doing what is best for the band. It doesn't necessarily mean your friend is better than you, it just means that the sound of the band blends better. Being appointed first chair is an honor within itself, and as long as you play your best you'll be making positive contribution to the band, and that's all that really matters.
        What an idiot....

When I was in band it was opposite. My friend was first chair and I was second. I challenged her once and she became so nervous, her hands were shaking while playing the clarient, I felt bad. She won... I never challenged her again. It wasn't that important to me. Oh, and nobody ever challenged me.....

Talk to her to see if she's going to challenge you?
            Good morning, son
            In twenty years from now
Maybe we'll both sit down and have a few beers
And I can tell you 'bout today
And how I picked you up and everything changed
            It was pain
            Sunny days and rain
I knew you'd feel the same things...

              Re: Uh oh

I was in the same situation as SCUBAbe. If your friend challenges you, they may just be doing it to see if they have what it takes, not to get back at you in some way. If a challenge does occur, though, I would still take it seriously. What I mean is practice and give it your all. Don't back down just because they are your friend. Your director must have placed you in first chair because of your ability. The band may sound better with you in first chair. If your friend wins a challenge, then refer to Tui's post. Good luck!
