  • butt in or butt out?

So I was just at the supermarket down the street from my house and I was appalled by something that I witnessed while I was there.

I was browsing the aisles and I heard a young boy speaking in a very sharp tone from one aisle over. I tuned him out until that family entered the aisle where I was looking for some onion bagels. I tried to ignore them but it became very difficult as they got closer to me. The family consisted of a father, a 6-7 year old boy and an 8-9 year old girl. The boy was obviously angry with his father about something and this is what I heard...

Boy: But I want it!! :verymad:
Dad: It's not on the list. :thumbdown
    Boy: I want it!!
Dad: It's not on the list, maybe next time.
Girl to her brother: Why did you even come?
Boy: Because I wanted to buy food!! I didn't know Dad was going to be an IDIOT!

I cannot believe that he just his father an idiot?!!? This kid went on and on degrading his father talking about how stupid he was and all that. I was getting rather annoyed listening to this child insult his father and the father did nothing. He didn't ask the child to stop or anything, he just took it. I really wanted to walk up to the boy and say, "Look, you don't talk to your father that way. He is here to buy food for you, food that he pays for with the money that he earns at his job. Until you start paying for your own food, he gets to choose what to buy not you! And you should not be speaking to him in that tone or calling him those names. It is extremely disrespectful and rude! You need to apologize to your father right now!"

Instead I held it back, took my bagels, and went to another aisle. Should I have butted in and scolded the child, or should I have just stayed out and minded my own business? If I had butted in, would the father have appreciated it, been angered by it, or just been embarassed by it? But if no one says anything, the kid just keeps on going.....

I guess that I chose to stay out of it because I didn't want to cause a bigger scene and I didn't want to embarrass the father (it's one thing for your child to behave inappropriately, it's another to have a stranger notice and discipline your child accordingly).

I was actually a bit surprised by this whole thing because the kids were wearing the uniform shirts for a local Lutheran private school. I know a dozen kids that attend that school and they are all extremely well behaved and gracious children and I was shocked to see this boy that comes from the same school behave in that manner.

But anyways, butt in or butt out? What do you think?

BTW I'm having a lot of fun with all the smiley faces! Didja notice?

    My best score ever!

Butt out. You don't know how the father would have reacted to his "precious angel" being disciplined by a stranger.

I would say butt out, just for the simple fact you don't know what that family is going through right now. The boy could be venting his anger from something else, but at least he's using words and not attacking his sister.

Through my family's situation this past year, I've learned not to make judgements (not saying you did at all) and to just let people be because you never know what they're going through.

I know how you feel though because when I hear kids talk to their parents and stuff that way you just want to tell them that and to be thankful they have both parents and stuf. But yeah, that's just my 2 cents.

Butt out. As hard as it is to not say something, it's best to not give advice unless asked because you might be met by a really bad response.

I say butt out. It's not your place to say as the kid isn't your son.

After what I went through at the park a few weeks ago disciplining some kid whose mother was talking on the phone, I'd say butt out. It would have been great to see you butt in, though! I'd have cheered you on!

As much as if I had been in the same situation I would sooooo have wanted to give that kid a piece of my mind.... I have to agree with everyone else. Sometimes its better just to turn and walk away. You could of ended up getting into a verbal altercation with the father for trying to disipline someone elses kid.

Having worked in education and being an authority figure to kids for almost 30 years its almost instinctive to get after a child regardless of if they are your own kids or not. But in an open environment like a store or a park where its not your job to police other peoples children you have to just shrug it off and walk away.

It's hard not to want to smack some rude ungrateful little demon seed, but disiplining yourself is not the answer. Next time try empowering the parent with dry wit.

For example you could look that the father and say in a discusted tone
"Now I know why some animals eat their young"

I would butt out...in this day and age parents are hesitant to disipline their kids in public. The father may have handled it in the car or at home.

So true, and you never know what the dad would do if you do step in. People are nutso these days.

I see kids behaving that way toward their parents where I work and I just cringe.

Butt out. Your one moment of clarity can't fix years of lazy parenting. It wouldn't do any good in the long run.
