  • Shoes: Fun vs. Functional?

I admit it, I'm a show whore. I wear tennies and jeans while I'm at DL or running errands, but for work, I have to wear dresses and businessy clothes. So, I buy a lot of shoes. High heels, specifically.
I love them, I love the way they make my legs look, the way they make me walk, all of that. But a majority of them are not comfortable shoes. I wear them anyway.
I make it up to myself with pedicures and lovely foot lotions and soaks at the end of the day, but I thought I'd ask all you gals: Which is more important for you in a shoe? Style or substance?

Definitely style first (count me in as a shoe ho too!) but it also has to be reasonably comfortable. Anything over 3" heels - forget about it!

I am not sure how to answer this because I too am a shoe whore. I work at home so I usually just wear Teva flops at home. I like to dress up when I am out and about now because most of the time I am wearing comfy stuff. If I see a really cute pair of high heels I will buy them and then find an outfit to go with them. Unfortunately a lot of times those really cute shoes hurt like heck, but if the shoes look good, then I feel good, so in turn I look good. Does that make any sense?

I love ugly shoes. Ugly, sensible European shoes. Those are the one I buy and wear everyday. I get compliments on them constantly. I find the uglier they are, the more compliments I get. I swear!

I also love beautiful shoes...beautiful uncomfortable shoes. Those are the ones I buy and wear hardly ever, but I'm so happy to have them and hoard them....

          I am just a ho.

          But to answer your question:

As for shoes, I have too many (or so I have been told but I don't believe this to be true). Mu husband always asks me how many feet do I have?
I work in an office with business formal attire, so yeah, I need them. I have two pairs of heels that I keep in a draw at work, so when I wear sneakers or flip flops I can change into my shoes. But than I have my heels at home, pumps, thick heels, platform type heels. Depending on what I am wearing, the shoe needs to fit.

Definitely style, but if I can find the best of both worlds... bonus!

And this is coming from someone who owns 30+ pairs of shoes... and counting.

Comfort. I've had problems with my feet and knees as of late from wearing the wrong kinds of shoes. Plus, it's hard to find nice, dressy shoes in narrow sizes, which is what I need.

I can't walk in heels to save my life, i'm such a klutz.

I still don't understand how women can wear those spiked heels and dance in them, i'd break both ankles if I even tried!!!

I'd have to say I"m somewhat in the middle I mainly live in flip flops so for the most part it's comfort. That said, I have on the cutest pair of Kitson flats today and they're killing my heels, but I love them so much I don't care

Comfort. I really don't even like how "stylish" shoes look anyway. I'm already 5'9 so I refuse to wear heels. I like wearing Vans but my favorite pair of shoes are blue and gray Teva Gamma tennies. They look all futuristic, and their the most comfortable shoes I've ever owned. If I have to wear a skirt, I just wear black boots or flats. What can I say? I'm a nerd and a tomboy.

                      30 pairs of shoes?

I have five. And I thought that was a bit much.

But to the question: Function and comfort. Though I do have two pairs of the exact same dress sandal (brown then black) with a design I really like.

I do need to go shoe shopping. I need a dressy pair for the winter.

                      I can't believe I'm saying that.

                        STYLE!

I work at home and am always barefoot, but when I go out it's usualy in heels...comfortable or not if they look good I'm happy!
I do have one pair that are sexy as hell, but hurt, I won't wear them if I have to walk much, but if I'm dressed up enough for them I don't have to walk ar anyway...
I have several pair of high heels that are comfortable to walk in though (just not all day)

I have a lot of dressy shoes. I used to sell shoes. I will only buy leather shoes and brand names. I have found if they are comfortable when I first put them on they will be comfortable to wear. The "break them in" has never worked out well for me. I will spend more money on a pair of shoes than on an outfit.

I'm for sure about style. I have WAY too many shoes. Casual, dressy, trendy flats, etc...
I bought the CUTEST pair of platform heels to go with a sexy nurse costume last Halloween. They hurt the CRAP out of my feet, but I danced with them all night, and everyone complimented them...

My answer a couple of months ago would have been comfort but lately I am loving my heels no matter how uncomfortable they get. Mostly it's either stilettos or flip flops for me. Can't even go near flat shoes, they're the most uncomfortable things. I wore one pair a couple weeks ago and they made my legs hurt for days.

I only shop where they have comfy cute shoes. I love Naturalizers and another brand but my brain is... yeah. I like Mary Janes or ballet flats.

Like you, I also love wearing high heels , but they have to be comfortable high heels. I have one pair that I love love love, but they are too high and therefore uncomfortable so I will only wear them on days when I know I will be sitting more than standing.

                                        Re: Shoes: Fun vs. Functional?

Since I've been in New England, I've needed good shoes - shoes that cover the feet and can work in snow. I discovered Clarks. I love them because they are so comfortable and some of them are cute high heels. Before living here I was only about style - comfort was not really important. Also when I was pregnant and then carrying a small child my shoes needed to be 'sensible'. But, recently, a male friend of mine that I haven't seen for years asked me if I still had my black shoes.... ! He described a very specific pair. I guess they made an impression on him.... I dug them out of the back of my closet.
So, to answer the question, I have flip-flopped back and forth on the issue and I guess it depends the demands of my day. If I could design my day; I would be sitting in a sexy pair of shoes and walking only a little. I did find a great pair of clarks that look very similar to 'the shoes' that my friend remembered after 4 years.
