  • What should I do?

I have some good news and some bad news.

The good news is I just got offered a new job with a great salary and excellent benefits. I accepted since I've been trying to get into this company for 8 months and I want to retire with this company.

Now the bad news. I have a trip planned to Disneyland Dec 1-4 and they want me to start on Dec 3. I have plane tickets bought, hotel reserved and park tickets.

Has anyone been in this situation and if so what did you do? I know the job is more important but just wondering if it's a good idea to ask for a different start date.

Thanks in advance for your advice.

Well, I would tell your new boss that you had a Vacation planned that lasted through the 4th, and ask him if he could extend your start date until after that... At any job I've ever been hired to, when they let me know I have been hired, and I accept they say "So we want you to start on this day, is that okay for you?" and if it is, I say yes, and if not, I tell them when I can start. I don't think it should be a big issue, especially if you tell them you already have everything booked and paid for... and even if they say no, asking never hurts!
    Good Luck!

I agree, it never hurts to ask. If not, I guess you just postpone the trip a little bit.

      But, congrats on the job!!

I would let them know, when you accept the job, that you do have NON REFUNDABLE plane tickets etc., and that you will be available to start on Dec. 4th. I'm sure they will understand.

Let them know. When I started my job, I had a 2 weeks planned off for my honeymoon- I let them know and they accomidated

I would also ask them, and let them know that this trip was already planned. Something similar happened to me with a previous job - the proposed start date was during a pre-planned week-long vacation. When I let them know, my new boss let me start a week later.

              Re: What should I do?

In my current job, I was offered it on a Thursday and they wanted me to start the following Monday. However, I was leaving on Friday morning for Disneyland and coming home Monday late at night. So, I told them I would be gone and that I'd prefer to have Tuesday to recover and start on Wednesday. They weren't exactly happy about it, but it was okay.

I have never ran into that situation but it really doesn't hurt to ask your boss. All of my past bosses were very flexible with my schedules and vacations. And I would say something to the effect that you know how important your new job is and you are very anxious to work at the new company.

Now I run a company and I'd like to consider myself just as flexible.

I hope it works out for you. Good Luck.

At most if you have to cancel could you? Did you get refundable plane tickets? Most hotels I'm sure would cancel. And the tickets I don't know about those.

Thanks for the advice everyone. I think I'm going to be ok. I have 2 background checks to go through (passing not a problem) and I was told with the Thanksgiving holiday that it could take a little longer. They advised me not to put in my 2 week notice with my current employer until the checks came back. they are going to let me give a 2 week notice and adjust my start date. They just made my start date the 3rd not taking into account the holiday.

                    Disneyland here I come!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I cant wait for my vacation. Looking at all the pictures of how the park is decorated is making it hard to make it to Dec 1st!
