  • DUCK44 & Sawtooth Peak(Sequoia National Park)

Last week I took a trip into the Mineral King arm of Sequoia National Park with my brother and stayed with some family friends. Unfortunately some Maraijuana growers decided to fire shots at a helicopter and the road was closed. We spent our first night in Visalia.
For details on the drug raid: see first story on Aug 9th:

The Aug 10th article discusses 'Operation Weed Free.'

The next morning we were escorted 20 miles up to Mineral King. This was no joke:

Once up to 7,500' we settled in and took a small hike to some waterfalls and caves.

The next day we hiked up to Franklin lake.

This is all a warm up for our Sunday climb of Sawtooth Peak.

Saturday we took a hike to see some big Sequoia's.

I found a good bathroom spot

That afternoon my brother and I decided to do another hike up to Eagle Lake. probably wasn't the smartest idea. This hike took us over 4 hours and up over 3000 vertical feet. All this before our morning push for Sawtooth.
Here I am with Sawtooth Peak behind me.(the far peak above my right shoulder)

another photo of Sawtooth, the far one)

Looking down from the ridge above Eagle lake

Got back to the cabin just before 7, ate and crashed.

We woke up at 6:30 and started for the top of Sawtooth. I was too tired to take photo's on the hike up and we barely stopped for 3 hours. Here is Sawtooth Pass with the peak on the right....still 1000 feet up.

Climbing the last 500 feet to the top. Looks like the moon. You can barely spot my brother in this photo climbing the rocks.

At noon we reached the top and signed our name in the book. at almost 12,500'

I started feeling a little dizzy and my legs were shot from climbling 5000 vertical feet so we headed down quickly.

About an hour later I looked back to what we just climbed.

    Another look back at Sawtooth.

And down to our starting point.

In all we hiked over 35 miles and climbed over 10,000 vertical feet. I slept good every night.

Great pics. Lucky you, I was born in Visalia- it's a cultural mecca.

At least now I know when I tell you to take a hike you won't be offended.

Great pix! We may be going up there next summer.
