  • Lasorda And His Opinion Of Dave Kingman's Perfomance: A Remembrance

In the baseball thread, I've posted a few pictures from a trip I took to old Yankee Stadium last year.

One of the things I missed was hearing the beautiful voice of Bob Sheppard, the legendary PA voice at the Stadium, heard only in recorded form now, to introduce each of Derek Jeter's at bats. (Sadly, Sheppard is too ill to continue at the mic.)

Paul Olden, who is known best for one innocently asked question following a Dodgers-Cubs game in May, 1978...has taken over full-time PA duties at the "new" Yankee Stadium this year (sans Jeter atbats).

Which leads me to an interesting article in today's LA Times.

    It was an innocent question.

All Paul Olden wanted to know was, what did then-Dodgers manager Tom Lasorda think of Dave Kingman's performance against the Dodgers that afternoon in Dodger Stadium.

More specifically, what was Lasorda's opinion of it?

The towering Kingman had just hit three home runs in a 10-7 Chicago Cubs victory on May 14, 1978, the last a three-run shot against Rick Rhoden in the top of the 15th inning.

In front of a Mother's Day crowd, the 6-foot-6 left fielder had driven in eight runs over the course of a five-hour game.

Olden, a reporter for radio station KLAC, needed a pithy comment to wrap up his day's work and send him on his way to join his family and celebrate what was left of the holiday.

Instead, the volcanic Lasorda gave Olden a sound bite for the ages, an off-the-cuff, profanity-laced classic.
Ahhh..memories of "underground" copies of that tape...the late, great Jim Healy...that was really something.

I finally met Paul Olden a few years back, and yes, the Kingman tape was mentioned. He just gave me that look of "you, too, huh" and talked about it as politely as he could.

Your thoughts...or, better put, "what's your opinion of this thread" Keep it clean, though...

God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.

That's what I remember most about Jim Healy.

"What the :bleep: do you think I though about Dave Kingman's performance? I thought it was :bleeping: horse :bleep:.

    So darn funny.

Seeing him tumble in the all star game from Vlad Guerrero's flying bat is one of the funniest things I've ever seen.

Also the stuttering John interviews with Tommy are legendary funny.
