So apparently NBC cut off the Closing Ceremonies to air The Marriage Ref and continued them after the local news??? Seriously!?!?!?

They made no kind of announcement or anything. Seems that we only missed Nickelsuck, er back and Avril Lavigne. Great job not having any REAL Canadian Icons perform **cough**RUSH**cough**.

I mean, they are Order of Canada (the Canadian equivelent of Knighthood) for crying out loud.

We kept rewinding thinking that we had missed RUSH - but, I guess Canada just left out the best thing they ever produced!

I'm still in Olympic hangover mode...

WOW! What a day yesterday. What a hockey game! I was able to watch the whole thing at work thanks to my GM. The cafeteria staff had a projector TV setup so that people could watch. What a nail-biter in those last 24 seconds. When Crosby got that last goal in OT, the folks in Coal Harbor must've gone nuts.

I thought the closing ceremony was well done, but, like others have mentioned where was Rush? I wanted to hear Closer to the Heart. It would've been perfect for the closing ceremony, especially for the last song and since the games slogan was With Glowing Hearts. Also, where were the Barenaked Ladies? They should've been there too, or Diana Krall since she's a BCer from Nanaimo.

Overall, I thought it was a great games. Probably the busiest in history.

I want to keep this thread going for the Paralympics. It just seems that once the Olympics are over, the Paralympics just seem to be forgotten about. There's one athlete that's competing for Japan I want to cheer on. He was a lift attendant at the ski hill I work at a few seasons ago. He' going to be competing in cross country skiing.

I had to post this. Check out these pics from yesterday, of the streets of Vancouver after the big hockey game...

                  Congratulations, Vancouver and surrounding areas.

You overcame some very unfortunate circumstances, none of which you could really have foreseen, and pulled off a great job hosting the Winter Olympics, from all I could tell.

As for me, I mostly watched hockey. But I watched a lot of riveting hockey throughout the tournament, and my love of the game, warming slowly since the NHL lockout of '04, has been rekindled. Congratulations on your gold medal, Canada. Some of the best hockey I've seen played was in this tournament, and the much-hyped gold medal game delivered it all.

The Opening Ceremonies were majestic, and you poked fun at yourself for the one malfunction, to start the Closing ceremonies and that was such a hoot.

I know some of you are disappointed that RUSH did not appear.

But I'll tell you this. This 53-year old shed a tear when Joni Mitchell's "Both Sides Now" was played during the Open, and another couple when the flame was doused when Neil Young's "Long May You Run" was finished.

For what it's worth, well done Canada. And to NBC - you know what my issues were. But when it came to commentators and cameras and presentation of the games, you did a very nice job too.
God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.

Tickets are already sold out for the opening and closing ceremonies, and Sledge Hockey.

Opening ceremonies will be held at BC Place. The Cauldron will be re-lit outside the convention centre as was for the Olympics a couple of weeks ago. (I guess they are re-lighting the indoor cauldron as well - hope it works this time :blush

Closing Ceremonies will be held in Whistler.

                              Where's the gold medal puck?

By: Stephanie Levitz, The Canadian Press

Sidney Crosby's missing Olympic gear may be back in the fold but where's the gold medal puck?

The head of the Vancouver Games and the International Ice Hockey Federation both acknowledged the puck from Canada's 3-2 overtime win over the U.S. also went missing -- although the IIHF says it has been found.

VANOC CEO John Furlong was awaiting confirmation on that Thursday.

"I knew it was missing because people were talking about it," Furlong said in an interview. "There's apparently some discussion going on today that it may have been found but I'm not sure. I haven't had anybody tell me that it's found, personally tell me.

"I know that they found the stick and the glove and I'm not sure what's going on with the puck but I understand it may have been secured, but I'm not sure, I'm waiting to hear."

Might want to send someone to the Dodger baseball training camp in Arizona...remember, Doug Mientkiewicz snatched the last ball from the Red Sox World Series win in '04, right??? Was he in camp on that fateful Sunday ten days ago? Or, adding to his collection?

Well, Vancouver 2010 is wrapping up today with the end of the Paralympics.

One of the biggest upsets was that Canada lost out on the Sledge Hockey medals. We lost our spot in the gold medal game to Japan (3-1), then we lost the bronze medal to Norway. Congrats to the US for winning gold in Sledge Hockey!

But... we did get gold in curling!

One of the biggest achievements of these Paralympics was Canadian skier Lauren Woolstencroft winning 5 gold medals! Congrats Lauren!
Woolstencroft wins record five gold medals

The closing ceremony is being held in Whistler starting at 7:00 pm. It will be interesting to hear what John Furlong has to say, this being his last speech of these games.

If the ceremonies aren't being broadcast live where you are located, they will probably be here:
                                  www.paralympicsport.tv/

It was quite the experience hosting the Olympics and Paralympics and the seven year build-up to the games.

Lets now put the spotlight on London 2012!

I didn't want to kill the thread just yet. Here's a couple of videos from Youtube:

I was almost expecting Smithers from The Simpsons to appear out of nowhere and dance along with them.

This was at one of the community celebrations during the Torch Relay, but I'm not sure which town it is from:

Watch the Inukshuk on the right at the beginning of the vid. lol

A few articles related to the wrap-up of the games:

VANOC plans to assist family of Georgian luge athlete killed at Vancouver Games

There's some talk floating around that VANOC may creat some sort of memorial at the sliding track at Blackcomb for Nodar. If anyone watched the closing ceremony for the Paralympics, John Furlong said his speech at the begining of the ceremony and then headed off to Georgia for a memorial for Nodar.

And a sign the games are truly over...

Sad the games are over, but our next opportunity to host the winter games may be Quebec City in 2022. If it does happen, I'm may try for the torch relay. It bugs me that I missed out this time around.

In case any Micechatters are in Vancouver on July 1, Canada Day, the cauldron will be re-lit for the day if you want to get photos of it:
$10,000+ to spare? You too could ignite cauldron
The Olympic flame will be lit again as part of this year's Canada Day celebrations.

That was the word Tuesday from Warren Buckley, president and CEO of the B.C. Pavilion Corp. (PavCo), the Crown corporation that manages the Olympic cauldron in Jack Poole Plaza at the Vancouver Convention Centre's west building.
