  • Good and bad sports uniforms

All this talk on the NFL threads that I created about the 1933 Eagles uniforms that they wore this week (9/23/07) got me to thinking about the best and worst uniforms in the world of sports past and present. So here's one man's opining on such, and feel free if you agree or disagree with my points.

    Baseball
    • BEST CURRENT: Yankees, Dodgers, Red Sox.
    • BEST ALL TIME: Yankees, Dodgers, Red Sox.
    • WORST CURRENT: Angels red-on-red alternate jersey, Devil Rays. You think they play bad, they look bad and will look worse next year!
    • WORST ALL TIME: Those 1970's Astros rainbow puke unis, the early 1980's Padres Taco Bell inspired outfits.

    NFL
    • BEST CURRENT: Steelers, 49ers, Bears.
    • BEST ALL TIME: Pre-1994 49ers, Bears, 1970's Steelers (block numbers).
    • WOST CURRENT: Bengals, Seahawks all-Pacific Blue (any team that goes "Harry High School" in a single color as well), Eagles' green pants.
    • WORST ALL TIME: 1948 and 1933 Eagles "throwups", any Bengals uniform after 1981.

    NBA
    • BEST CURRENT: Celtics, Bulls, Wizards home and away.
    • BEST ALL-TIME: Celtics, pre-1998 Lakers, Bulls, 1970's Knicks, 1982-83 76ers.
    • WORST CURRENT: Bucks (Merry Christmas!)
    • WORST ALL-TIME: Early 1980's Nuggets (Rainbow chested unis).

    NHL
    • BEST CURRENT: The pre-1967 Original Six, Ducks.
    • BEST ALL TIME: Pre-1967 Original Six, Flyers 1973-75 (Call me a homer, but I love there jerseys).
    • WORST CURRENT: Flames (samsma and other Calgarians are mourning as I speak), Stars (looks like a black Harvard or Boston University with an arched city name and number on the front), Sabres (the "Buffa-Slug"), Minnesota Wild (Christmas red and green).
    • WORST ALL TIME: 1981 Canucks Star Trek "V" uniforms, '81-92 Devils red-and-green Christmas packages (the owner's wife came up with the colors).

(NOTE: I really liked the Cooperalls the Flyers wore in the early 1980's. I thought they were unique, but the NHL banned them.)

    NCAA (Football and Basketball)
    • BEST CURRENT AND ALL TIME: Notre Dame, Penn State, Alabama, Michigan and Southern California football, North Carolina and UCLA basketball.
    • WORST CURRENT AND ALL TIME: Oregon football and any other hideous Nike template, Temple's current football (only cool thing is the V-neck of diamonds representing the famous Russell Conwell "Acres of Diamonds" speech").

There they are. Now, please chime in with your picks.

No mention of when the Chicago White Sox wore shorts?

That would be a different story. I remember those unis. Good thing they will never wear them in a turn-back-the-clock-game!

I am glad that the White Sox have gone back to the pin stripes of their earlier days. I went to a "turn back the clock game, where they wore the uniforms of the early 1900's. Fun day spent with my brother, and his family. We got on television during that broadcast. It was during the time that the "Field of Dreams" movie came out.

That was the make-up game on the day after the All-Star Break IIRC at the Old Cominskey Park, last World Championship before 2005.

Keith Olbermann on NBC last night said that his "worst man in the NFL" was whoever it was that decided that the Eagles would wear those unis yesterday.
His nightmare...that Donovan McNabb, who had a great game, or some other superstitious type might suggest they wear em again next week...

I think he said it's time to throw back the "throwback" idea...at least if it involves something that makes one look like a canary.

I hated the 1970's White Sox "jail team" uniforms.

Among the worst of all time...that horrendous Angels periwinkle blue thing that Disney first dreamed up.

By the way, I loved the Astros multi-color that they wore in the 80's.

I remember how much fun it was. The old Comisky Park, and the new Comisky Park sat across the street from each other. Going to Comisky Park was always a treat for me. Living on the North Side, and not driving, I got to go very rarely.

I'm with Barry, those Periwinkle Angels uni's were pretty bad.

I'm sure if I thought about it some more I could think of some other bad ones.

And I'm with Barry, I kind of dug the old Astro's uni's.

My buddy and I made a "pilgrimmage" of sorts in August of 1990 to see the Angels and White Sox in a three-game weekend series at Comiskey. We just had to see the old park in its last season.

The new stadium towered over it across the street. The made it too big, in my opinion, and missed out on the faux "old-fashioned" trend that began with Camden Yards a couple of years later.

I was thrilled to get a chance to see baseball in the same place where Babe Ruth and Shoeless Joe Jackson and so many of the greats once played.

Re: Good and bad sports uniforms

Hey, Radiobarry, I mentioned that in the NFL threads as an edit to those unis. Some of the other lines by KO included that they were designed to rattle the already rattled Jon Kitna, looked like the 1972 Winnipeg Blue Bombers and pointed out that the uniforms - born in 1933 - were rejects from the World Football League and was a reminder about 1933: The Great Depression! Also, ESPN's Neil Everett said "They looked good on the drawing board", Steve Mariucci on NFL Network added "They should throw them back in the closet." And Fox's Jimmy Johnson said "With those uniforms, I'd be embarrased to take the field."

And BTW, Jeff Lurie, the Eagles owner, thought it would be great to see these unis. I say buy 'em...and burn 'em like the 1960 Denver Broncos with their brown and yellow VERTICALLY STRIPED socks.

Costas mentioned that they're obviously using these unis to promote merchandising.

Are those unis being sold in Philadelphia?

Would any self-respecting, Santa Claus-booing, Eagle fan be caught...dead(?) wearing one?

Would schoolkids be allowed to wear em in the classroom?

The picture on the wall shows the two Comiskey Parks as the sat across the street from each other. The new Comiskey Park was far from finished at that point. I bought that print, and it's been hanging on that wall for a long time.

Unforunately, yes, and on the world wide interwebs as well through the NFLShop.com and philadelphiaeagles.com.

Not with school uniforms supposedly in place.

Blinding opponents with Neon Yellow was Oregon's plan.

                              Genius.

I serve as a part-time unpaid consultant for the people at Philadelphia's Mitchell and Ness, who make the retro (old-style) flannel uniform replicas of the baseball teams. Their web site is located at http://www.mitchellandness.com, and they have most of the old unis from all four sports.

I must disagree with you there on the new Boston Bruins uniform.

This uni's a lot better than the old one they wore when the arena formerly known as the Enema (Fleet) Center was opened.

Whose idea was that to have them wear Winnie the Pooh as a third jersey?

                                      EDIT: Photobucket is a b****.
