I was doing some research and I ran into something that was totally interesting and had me stop what I was doing to read about it....

    ...enjoy!
Three-time MVP Larry Bird, noting that Bryant has been the NBA's premier player for years, told Sports Illustrated's Dan Patrick before this week's announcement, "When someone told me the other day that Kobe hadn't won an MVP trophy, it sort of made me feel like I wanted to throw mine away."

I never knew any of that. I appreciate the links. I never realized the history that the Angels and the Cubs share. Very interesting reading. I probably saw all those baseball movies mentioned many times as a kid. We were always excited when a baseball movie was on. I do remember when the Dodgers moved to California.

Thanks goof! Nothing like the history of the grand old game. That's what sets it apart from other sports.

Does anyone remember the old TV series "Home Run Derby?" They shot the show there back in 1959 IIRC.

So basically the Los Angeles Angels were the farm team for the Chicago Cubs. I knew they were originally a minor league team but didn't know which club they belonged to. Interesting!

Don't forget that the Cubs spring training was on Catalina Island for many years, and even now you can see the Wrigley Mansion if you visit there. So it isn't surprising that there is a connection between the Chicago Cubs and Southern California.

Too bad we couldn't have seen a Cubs/Angels WS this year.

Thanks for the very interesting links, Goofygoof...I was fairly aware of the history involving Mr. Wrigley, Los Angeles, and the PCL Angels...this helped fill in some of the gaps.

Oh yes, I remember watching "Home Run Derby". It wasn't intended to be, but it turned out to be one of the "camp" TV shows of all time! Willie Mays, Hanl Aaron, etc may have been great playes in that day, but those "interviews" were almost painful! And you always see this one house out beyond

The shows were on ESPN Classic a few years ago. I wish they were on, again.
              centerfield.

I don't recall if this was covered in one of the links...Gene Autry went to the AL meeting just to secure the radio rights to the Angels for the old KMPC. He came away owning the team, which he held until the sale to Disney in the mid-90's.
God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.

My brother watched Home Run Derby when it wasn't reruns.
