So now that we are in the thick of the Baseball playoffs, I always get nostalgic. I start thinking of all the great series, and games and players I have had the joy to watch.
Whether they are with my favorite teams (The Dodgers and Angels) or not, there are some players I just love despite what team they play for.
So I thought I'd try and make my own all-star team.
Here are the rules:
One (and ONLY one) player from each position in your starting line-up. (Outfield not important which position, but you can only have 3).
10 "Bench" players.
7 "relief" pitchers and 2 closers.
(Of course, most of the players we will have on our bench or as relief pitchers we would take on ANY team. LOL)
The players you pick must have been playing in your lifetime. (So no Babe Ruth or Mickey Mantle). At least I don't THINK anybody here is THAT old.
That's it.
So for my team, I'm not only picking players who are great players, but in the case of players like Tony Gwynn and Cal Ripken Jr, players that are absolutely great, but also have been great ambassadors for baseball.
So without further ado, here is my team:
Manager: Tommy Lasorda (who else)
Starting Line-Up:
Batting Order:
1) Rickey Henderson - Outfield
2) Steve Sax - 2nd Base
3) Eddie Murray - 1st Base
4) Bo Jackson - Outfield
5) Tony Gwynn - Outfield
6) Cal Ripken Jr - 3rd Base
7) Ozzie Smith - Short Stop
8) Mike Scioscia - Catcher
9) Fernando Valenzuela - Pitcher
Bench Players:
Dave Winfield
Ken Griffey Jr.
Gary Carter
Kirby Puckett
Alex Rodriguez
Pedro Guerrero
Ryne Sandberg
Joe Carter
Ivan Rodriguez
Todd Helton
Relief Pitchers:
Randy Johnson
Orel Herschiser
Tom Glavine
Greg Maddux
Curt Schilling
Roger Clemens
Pedro Martinez
Closers:
Dennis Eckersly
Mariano Rivera
