  • How do I make my wireless Internet connection work better?

Right now it's so bad to my laptop. It works ok with my regular computer, probably because there's a more direct "line" and it has a bigger plug in one. My laptop uses a built in receiver (whatever it's called).

I never get more than 3 bars and it frequently loads slowly. A lot of times pages won't load at all and I have to diagnose and repair. It either says there's no issue (lies!) or I reset the router or it doesn't know. Today it has been so bad, it's already rest twice and still my connection is stinky.

We can't move the router out from under the desk because the cords are so short. That was the only thing I could think of to help.... any other ideas?

And I can tell you 'bout today
And how I picked you up and everything changed
    It was pain
    Sunny days and rain
I knew you'd feel the same things...

Re: How do I make my wireless Internet connection work better?

are you using a direct connection or are you using a router?
well basically you can call your provider with this one.. since they are the one that will reposition your antenna for better reception or they can raise the height of your antenna..

well one thing that hinders good connection are tall trees and buildings since they are the one that blocks the signal..
    just do what you think...

Based on your information I'm guessing that your wireless station is also your router. Which means that the cable comes out of the wall and then another cable goes into your desktop and the router is under the desk. You say that the cables are too short to move anywhere else.

I would suggest that you get two new longer cables to get that router off the ground and and away from your other electronics.

Another thing to check into is your router locked down with a password? If not your neighbors could be sucking down your bandwidth.

Yeah, sorry, we have a router. I didn't know that there was even an antanea with it. I think it's all the dumb corners and angles of this house, as it all worked fine in the old one.

I wasn't aware that they sold longer cables lol duh. You think that moving it out will help?

We def. have a password and all that security stuff. It was the first thing we did when we hooked it up

Move the device as close to the center of your house as you can. That way you will reach more locations. You might also move it higher which gets it away from other electronic and power interference.

Keep the router upright as well. The antenna's inside are designed to have maximum effectiveness when standing vertically.

If your desktop is next to the router, there is no need to have it be wireless. It can plug in directly to the router.

Do you know what type of router you have and what wireless standard you are using?

Try one of those rangebooster routers. That's what I have (a D-Link one). The router is hooked up through my cable modem (which is a hard-wired connection), which is also connected to my desktop computer in the spare bedroom. My laptop is on the other side of my apartment in the livingroom. I get great reception and everything is separated by a big wall (plus I usually leave the door to the spare bedroom closed when I'm not in it as there's too many things the cats could get into in there).

The other thing to try would be look into changing the channel on the wifi router and the notebook (although the notebook should scan and pick it up on whatever channel you use.). One of the big things would be crosstalk from other wireless routers from your same provider. Usually you can choose another channel....and most don't. So if you choose another channel you may actually get better signal strength since you aren't competing with your neighbor.

Should be within the router settings (same place you went to set up the security).

Re: How do I make my wireless Internet connection work better?

Usually you can configure your access point or router by going to a specific web page via an ip address. The address usually starts with 192.168.x.x Not knowing what your specific device is I can't say for sure. As one of the settings on that page you should be able to setup your wireless device, one of those settings should be what channel to use.

I hope that makes some sense.

Oh... right. We set this thing up so long ago that I didn't remember about that page. Thanks!

Channels 1, 6, and 11 are the only ones that don't overlap one another. My wireless router has an "auto" setting that uses the least noisy of the three.
