  • Windows 7 Rant

I just got a new computer with Windows 7. I HATE it. I can't hook up my Laserjet 2100 to it. My brand new wireless USB device doesn't work with it. It crashes just like Vista. I have 20 years of work product in old WP-DOS that I can't even look at anymore. It sucks.

Re: RSS wallpaper feed for Windows 7

I've been running it for 6+ months without a single crash. a laserjet should be possible with simple postscript drivers somewhere... plus it's about as old as dirt. It has vista drivers, you should be able to use those.

WP DOS? Seriously? Worst case, run XP emulation and convert your stuff to something used in the last 20 years

Use the HP Universal Print Driver for Windows 7 it supports all LaserJets ever made, from the LaserJet III to the newest models: HP LaserJet 2100 Printer series- HP Universal Print Driver for Windows PCL6 - HP Business Support Center

If you've got Windows 7 Professional or above, you can always grab XP Mode to run those older apps: Download Windows XP Mode

When you say 'it crashes just like Vista', what exactly is crashing? Third Party apps that are not associated with the Operating System? You can always run the compatablity troubleshooter if you've got an app that's crashing or was designed for a previous version of Windows: Make older programs run in this version of Windows

A little research goes a long way.

My favorite quote from a post I was reading online...
I hate Windows 7 and I don't even know anything about it yet.
Says a ton about how people don't always give something a chance.

Agree wholeheartedly with this post. We've been running it at work now for about 5 months without a single crash (and we're not nice to computers, we've caused several iMacs to give up the ghost... yes, they do crash, and crash hard, too sometimes). We haven't had any drivers problems with 7. If you had it working on Vista it should work on 7 without a problem. It's also a pretty simple google search to find drivers. Simply google for "your operating system" + "full product name" + "drivers" like this "windows 7 hp 2100 laser jet drivers" and see what comes up.

As for your WP Dos: MS Office 2003 will open and convert wp dos formats to the .doc format. It should do a pretty good job of it. 2007 probably does as well. If you don't have MS Office, there is always the open source alternative Open Office (http://openoffice.org) that should be able to open and convert them as well.

It really is time to move forward into the 21st century with your technology there or very soon it will be completely unuseable and unconvertable as things will simply have moved to far past it. You're getting very close to that point now.

Our revels now are ended. These our actors, As I foretold you, were all spirits and Are melted into air, into thin air: And, like the baseless fabric of this vision, The cloud-capp'd towers, the gorgeous palaces, The solemn temples, the great globe itself, Yea, all which it inherit, shall dissolve And, like this insubstantial pageant faded, Leave not a rack behind. We are such stuff As dreams are made on, and our little life Is rounded with a sleep. mycroft16 on Twitter

I'm infamous for crashing macs. When I was in graphic design I could not do my projects on the macs. They would always crash on me. I would do all my projects at home on my PC and as long as they opened on the mac I got credit. I do not have a love for macs after loosing so much work and having to redo it all.

I must be one of the very few who never had any real issues with Vista. Then again, it came preloaded on my laptop (my desktop still runs XP). Once I upgraded the RAM on my laptop and Microsoft released all those updates & service packs, it's gotten better.

If I had an extra $2500 to throw around though, I'd get a 17" MacBook Pro in a heartbeat.
