  • Avast Antivirus Software?

Yes, it's that time of the year again to renew my Norton Securtiy software, but I'm not sure if I want to renew it again or try something else. I've been reading about free software, Avast Antivirus. Does anybody use this and do you think this will protect my computer? Or does anyone have a different recommendation?

I'm not extremely computer savvy, but I'm not totally clueless, so as long as it doesn't take a degree in computer science, I should be able to figure things out.

Thanks for any information you can give me....

I have been using it for a while now since Matt Hamand recommended it and it has 'protected me' a few times now. I am very happy with it and would recommend it to anyone.

I have avast, and I like it.
However I don't think it does automatic scans?
      Good morning, son
      In twenty years from now
Maybe we'll both sit down and have a few beers
And I can tell you 'bout today
And how I picked you up and everything changed
      It was pain
      Sunny days and rain
I knew you'd feel the same things...

Mine does because it has warned me of an incoming attack twice. It also does the automatic database updating.

Oh yeah. I meant automatically scanning your computer for viruses on your hard drive, like every day at 5 p.m. doing a scan.

I think your right on that. I know when I initially installed it at that time it did a complete scan. Mine is set up to check any internet sites I go to or email I get but about once a month I do re-run a complete scan.

Good luck getting rid of Norton if you do decide. It can be problematic... like getting rid of AOL.

^ It took me awhile to get all of Norton off too ... it's a PITA.

I haven't heard of Avast, I've been using AVG (which is okay). But maybe I'll try Avast.

I use AVG on a couple of older slow laptops. AVG seems to work well, I haven't had any problems so far. I used to have Norton on them until the site license expired. I tried to load the Comcast McAfee on them but the laptops didn't have the memory or speed for it.

                    Re: Avast Antivirus Software?

I've used both AVG and Avast at work and home. Both work really well and are great products.

If I might suggest a further tool, "Spybot Search & Destroy." It's a free tool that cleans malware and adware and spybots off your system. It also puts protection on Firefox and IE to prevent them from installing in the future. It also has an included tool called "Teatimer" that watches which programs are trying to access your network connection or are being accessed by your network and allows you to deny that access if you don't recognize it.

These our actors, As I foretold you, were all spirits and Are melted into air, into thin air: And, like the baseless fabric of this vision, The cloud-capp'd towers, the gorgeous palaces, The solemn temples, the great globe itself, Yea, all which it inherit, shall dissolve And, like this insubstantial pageant faded, Leave not a rack behind. Re: Avast Antivirus Software?

Avast also has troubles with 'resetting' and will suddenly activate when you are gaming--and for me, that meant sometimes a little window popping up in the middle of an environment and causing a shutdown---Took me forever to figure out how to such the feature off, but it would reset as soon as the computer was turned off.

It was not very user friently.

                        Peace,

Norton is a memory hog and a half... and a PITA to get rid of. I use CA now as I got it for free from my internet provider. It does the job, so I'm happy with it.

Thanks for all the input, I've got 5 days left to decide what to do. I'm going to have to look into AVG within the next couple of days too.
