  • Apple drops the ball on Final Cut X

Thinking of doing the upgrade? Here are just some of the things that are missing from the new version.

    • Cannot open previous Final Cut Pro projects
    • Can not have FCP 7 and 10 open at the same time.
    • Does not support Photoshop files properly.
    • Can not export out media to say pro-tools or other software.
    • OMF and XML export and import completely eliminated
    • Media keeps wanting to copy itself to the local drive, so if you have an external hard disk, it still wants to copy the media.
    • No support for Capture from Tape or Edit to Tape.
    • No true video output or second monitor support.
    • Color Correction tool is mediocre
    • There is no "Reconnect Media" function or any other function that will tell you where the media is located.
This is just the things that I have seen and others have pointed out so far. I mean, not support Photoshop, I use Photoshop all the time, everyone uses Photoshop.

    Your thoughts.

While I have never used Final Cut, it seems that more and more Apple is just being overly obnoxious with their software. Not surprised about the snub at Photoshop, it seems to be fitting for Apple being childish towards Adobe is not all that new.

Yet another isolationist tactic from Apple. Yet another reason to push their products into the dustbin of history.

You can't be all things to all people if you refuse to play well with others.
Apparently they didn't listen to their mommies...

When Conan O'Brien is making fun of computer software, then you know how bad it is.

Would you say Premiere 5.5 is better? Was Final Cut 7 better than Premiere 5.5? I use both but for the last 5 months have stuck with premiere because of its multicore support. Compressor was so complicated. I had to make a reference file first, then it would use all 8 of my cores. I compress 50mbit streams so it was important to me, but I am wondering if there was anything you liked in final cut 7 that premiere did not have.

          Thanks!

I think that Adobe has done wonders to bring Premiere up to it's current level. I would have said that it's neck and neck with Final Cut 7 being that there are pros and cons for both versions of the software.

I consult with several companies are we are looking at all options for what we can do. For some of the companies I would be a switch over to Premiere, for another they are looking at Advid.

There is a good article over at Creative Cow about trying out Premiere if you use FCP 7 and don't think that FCPX will do the job for you.

Just another reason I have stuck with Sony Vegas Pro for nearly 5 years now. Sure I can't do fancy stuff with a click of a button, but its versatile enough that I can do whatever I want, with my own workflow, and not have to worry about compatibility issues.

The debate continues about FCP-X. Here is some more views on the subject. (Each part is about 10 minutes long).
