  • Windows 8 - Anyone started testing it yet?

Windows 8 consumer beta is out for free download and install.

It is a major change from all older versions of windows.

Has anyone here started testing yet?

I downloaded it yesterday and have begun looking at it today. So far so good.

I have it running in VirtualBox. I HATE the U.I. for a computer. I'm sure it's great for a tablet or a phone but for a desktop it's not intuitive at all.

I was under the impression you could switch back to a more classic UI. The new UI was definitely made for the more non-traditional user. My guess is that most consumers will use the new UI, but most businesses will either stay with XP/7 or just use the classic UI.

Any time a UI gets a major change, I cringe. There are some nice features to a more app feeling UI, but ..

It think that you have to break down this version of windows into several different categories.

          1) Does the OS work and is it fast? You can also toss in is it faster than xp/vista/7?

          2) Does the software run on it and again how fast?

          3) Changes to the User Interface (UI). This is the biggest change and the thing that people see from the start. Is it unworkable, hard to learn, or just doesn't work?

I'm running it right now and rather enjoy it. There are some things that need to be polished out, but the usability is by no means as bad as the internet would like to believe.

This is going to be a PITA for corporate IT, I'm hoping my workplace just skips the whole thing and waits for Windows 9, which will better incorporate the metro aspects of 8.

I wanted to try it but I no longer have a box to "play with" so Ill just wait till it is mass released. I did beta the Windows 7 and was hurt when I had to do a fresh install when it was released (even after buying a copy).

Windows 8 is supposed to be very Touch-Screen-centric - which is good if you have a Tablet, or in my case I need to build a Vehicle PC for my Work Truck - Not a Laptop in a mount that's too easy to break or steal.

They make them using a Micro-IDE Motherboard and a 12V power supply with an extruded case about the size of a big stereo amplifier... I can lock the CPU in a nice (ventilated) steel box bolted to the floor under the seat, and it isn't coming out without heavy artillery. They can steal the monitor, but they're a dime a dozen. My eyeballs can't cope with that itty-bitty Droid screen on the dashboard very well.

I have found the split between the metro interface and the desktop to work quite well. Much better than most people on the internet are letting on.

Once an ecosystem for apps that work in that metro system are developed enough, the desktop architecture and file system should be needed less and less anyway, which I don't think is a bad thing. Also, with the shift to "cloud" (the coined term which is a huge pet peeve for me) storage, having personalized and detailed computer file structures just wont be as important as it has been in the past for most people.
