converting avi files to gif - know how?

I have some avi video files I shot on my digital camera of Disneyland.
I'd like to convert them to gifs so I can use the 2-5 second clips as
    clipart on my website.

Anyone know FREE software to do this OR how to do it in Photoshop,
Illustrator or in basic Windows based software that isn't TOO expensive?

    Any help is much appreciated!

If you've got Photoshop, you've likely got the program that comes with it, ImageReady. In ImageReady, open the avi file. It may ask you to select the range you want to use, if need be. It'll import it as an animated file with layers. Crop/resize as needed. Click the "Optimized" tab in the image window to see what it will look like, and on the right there should be an optimization menu. Pick one of the GIF options. When you have the settings as you want them, go to File>Save Optimized As... and you should be able to then save it as a GIF.

Thanks for the info... I have 5.0 - yes ancient version I know...
Aparently mine is old enough however to not come with Image Ready!

GIMP may have the ability to do that. I haven't used GIMP for anything but gif/jpg images, but it might work. You can download it at www.gimp.org for free, as its an open source program.

Or http://www.plasticbugs.com to get GIMPShop, a version of Gimp that's been arranged to make transition from Photoshop to Gimp smoother (and, thus, makes a LOT more sense... the menus have always been Gimp's weakness).
