  • RAM Question

I have 1 gig of RAM. The way it is set up is that the memory mode is in Single Channel mode.

    So I have x2 256 module and a 1 512 module.

I'm not good at figureing out the ram stuff. The x2 256's look like this...

That's not the ram I have, that's just what it looks like.

The 512 one just looks like your normal ram chip.

That image IS the one I have.

When I have all 3 in at 1 gig, I'm in single mode. But if I take the 512 out, I'm in dual mode. I understand that I have to get another 2 256's to put me at 1 gig in dual mode.

After all that, my question is: Am I better off having 512 ram in dual mode, or 1 gig but at single mode.

I Ask because when I'm at 1 gig, the machine does not act like a machine with a gig of ram. So I was wondering...

Let's start off with this question - what motherboard do you have?

Can you actually get a better idea of what the ram is? Is this a home built system or a pre-built system?

It's an intel motherboard. But I don't know the excat kind. I'll find out and I'll find out about the ram too. It's a home built system. I got most of the parts from my brother in law, and he didn't have the boxes from them, so I'll open it up and find out. Everytime I think I understaand this stuff, it changes.

Intel? Hmm.I am not sure I recall which Intel chipsets were dual channel for memory. More information would be useful.

What do you use your computer for? (Primary use? Secondary use?)
