the day of reckoning has come! For some reson or another iTunes 6 wopuldn't download to my computer and give me errors and stop installing. Now the new version is here and it looks like I will finally be able to experience iTunes! Yay!
what is a a pod cast? and how do you watch it with out a mps player?
A Podcast is a recorded show about anything usually about a certain topic. Some are in video format but most are in audio format. All you do is download the podcast and transfer it to your mp3 player and there ya go. If you have a mp3 player with video capability than you can do the same with video podcasts.

A podcast is sort of like a radio show, except for download. Certain podcats can be access via the iTunes Music Store and iTunes will automatically download new shows.
iTunes itself works as a normal media player, utilizing QuickTime, and media organizer. You don't need an iPod to use iTunes, Podcasts, iTunes Music Store, etc.
it will be just like movies you have in the stores for rent, etc.
Movies from itunes is a raw deal.. not worth it
- large files (how many before you run out of storage)
- can't burn to dvd
- expensive (for the same price you can buy most DVDs outright)
- can only view on computer or ipod
Where as for almost the same price you can buy the DVD outright and rip it to play on your ipod if you care.. or download it illegally and have all the same 'near instant' (downloading 600megs isn't instant.. anywhere ) gratification (similar to itunes) but with none of the limitations.
video from the store makes sense for TV shows, etc.. smaller and not easily accessible legally.. but movies at $10 isn't worth it. A DVD you can keep on your shelf forever.. a itunes d/l you can only keep till you run out of room or burn off-line.. which you would have to copy back to your computer to play decently.
music was different because you got it in a format not really accessible legally before (by single song) and was cheap compared to buying the existing legal formats (albums or singles)
Yep, love iTunes 7. Love all the new video features and the new layout.

iTunes fan here too! And I don't have an I-pod, and run Windows. I enjoy podcasts of everything from ESPN shows to a great radio weekly show, Newsweek On Air which I can no longer hear on radio stations in my area.
And when I click on BD's link come show time, the Bop Shop comes up in...I-Tunes!

God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.

unless youre gonna download every movie available as of right now its perfectly reasonable to expect all the movies you would buy to fit without a hitch on your comp. in the mean time you can work on getting an external (for when you eventually convert your entire library to digital). plus the size of even laptop comps is getting quite large. Large enough at least to hold enough movies to hold me over until I can afford an external to store ALL my movies.

for about twice the price you can buy a DVD and rip for use on your iPod.

again i dont think it was ever implied that you should store all of your movies on your hard drive. it will obviously require an external drive of some sort. i want to download movies but i dont want any of them on the hard drive of the system i use everyday. it would slow down too much.
its all a work in progress. its not perfect. things will improve.
ha ha. i bet there are thousands, nay millions, of people who wish they could get their PCs to work properly!
Its called macintosh, yo!
Don't start the holy wars

The point is the files are huge compared to what most lay people are used to dealing with. For what you could fit 100-200 songs in.. you can now fit 1 movie. That means what most lay people would probably buy PERIOD.. now is equivalent to 1 movie. Buying 5-10 movies now eats up a significant portion of your HD. Yes you can buy more storage.. but the point is you must DEDICATE storage to keeping these large files.. vs DVD which you don't have to do anything for.. except just keep the disc.
You will find long term you will not want to keep the HD space dedicated to the movies.. so in effect what you are paying for is a long term rental.. because eventually you'll toss the data and in effect.. throw out your purchase. Because you can't re-download things you've bought in the past.

Don't waste your money. Why rip all your movies? Most good quality rips are about 600megs/hr of video. That means each decent movie will take about 1-1.5gigs.. JUST FOR THE MOVIE.. not counting any extras. (POTC download is 1.64gigs from itunes). That's another area the d/l version will stink compared to DVDs.. lack of extras. You're paying basically the same price and get less.
ok so what store can you buy POTC at for 9.99?
You can buy it for $12.99 and get the full 2 DVD set in true anamorphic view, DTS sound, and with all the extras. From itunes you'd pay 9.99, have to wait for it to download.. get no extras.. get no full DTS and anamorphic widescreen.. and then have to worry about losing it if I ever delete the file. DVD prices are falling like mad. New titles are usually $18 MAX.. and fall under $15 quickly and the $9.99 shelf is the most dominate price in DVDs these days. And now you find the $5 bin in almost all stores, not just discount stores. You will not be finding the $5 bin on iTunes that's for sure! No reason to discount when you have no inventory!
really? cause i hooked up my PowerBook to my TV to watch some TV shows i bought and I thought it worked just fine.
You still watched it on your PC.. What 'monitor' you used is irrelevant. I don't keep computers in my living room.. nor do I care to. Watching on your PC all you get from itunes is VGA resolution.. which while greater then DVD resolution, does not give you things like anamorphic views so I can watch it in true 16:9 w/o letterbox.. and not every TV has DVI or VGA input.. so then you're dumbing down to S-Video to get out of your powerbook. Component is the 'common baseline' something built-in video on computers don't offer.

Twice the price? No. itune's prices are $9.99 to $14.99. Shelf price for DVDs are $5-$20. The DVDs offer more content, better quality audio, are more 'durable', require no expensive HD space. The itunes version only offers 'access', but offers no other value you can't get from DVD already. The other angle they will offer is 'early access' to movies before DVD release, but at what cost are you willing to see the movie? If you are looking to keep it, just wait for the DVD.

'A' hard drive.. 'your' hard drive.. makes no difference. You have to dedicate storage to it. I have 4 HDs on my main computer, I have plenty of space.. doesn't mean I want to fill it up for DVDs for years when I have a shelf in the other room that will hold my DVDs indefinatly.
Until they start offering things you CAN'T do with DVDs or offering them at significantly cheaper prices then DVDs.. its a toy. Being able to play video on the ipod is not what has kept back all the other movie services like Movielink or CineNow from being very successful.
The doing something MORE or cheaper is what is making TV video and other 'unique' content successful on iTMS and others. Its not content people tend to keep long term, they can't easily (legaly) get it elsewhere in full form, it has a reasonable data size (shorter shows, usually lower quality), and its competitivly priced.
Right now people are 'outsoucing' their TV content to iTunes. Eventually they will build up their own methodologies to do it, and take it inhouse and keep all the income to themselves. If you don't care about DRM on your content (which many TV shows have passed on now).. iTunes is hosting, transaction processing, and a form of advertising for you. When you are CBS.. you don't need Apple for advertising
