  • IE7 - Pros and Cons??

Just got a new computer and Yahoo is recommending that I upgrade to IE7. I'm not a pro at any Internet Explorer (I prefer Mac computers and have been using Safari). Hubby (PC user) says he does not like the new IE7 and I shouldn't use it.

Any opinions / suggestions out there? TIA

Re: IE7 - Pros and Cons??

Uprading is important from a safety perspective. IE7 handles add-ons (ActiveX) differently than IE6, and the IE7 browsing client is seperated from Windows (unlike IE6), so there is less of a chance of Malware/Spyware installing without your approval.

Microsoft has also changed the interface to be Vista-like (since both IE7 share the same code-base on XP and Vista), and it takes some getting used to, but it's much better than the IE6 interface. Once people get used ot it, they like it. It's less cluttered than IE6, and all IE functions are in a few menus. Plus, they've added Tab browsing, and a whole plethora of other features.

Also, I do not recommend the Yahoo! branded IE7, and that you just use the standard Microsoft Installer (Yahoo ads way too much crap to IE7):

IE7 can also be installed through Windows Update. (And you should have been prompted to install it if you have Automatic Updates turned on.)

Thanks MonorailMan for helping out a PC newbie! I may be a Mac lover, but I'm not a PC hater; I'm keeping my mind open.

What exactly is tab browsing? How are the top menus different? Where do I find out if I have automatic updates on or not?

IE7 is much much better. Compatibility has proven to be pretty decent for mainstream sites so far too. Compatibility is an issue for business applications, but on the web in general you should be ok.

It renders MUCH faster then IE6 and has more security layers too. I recommend it. And echo MM's comments.. never install a branded client if you don't have to.

Tab browsing: Instead of using multiple windows, you use multiple tabs. Like this:

You can easily open and close tabs just like windows. It's like putting different windows inside the same browser window.

Menus: Instead of the confusing amount of menus, there's only about 3 (Page, Print, Tools), and they are all related to the buttons in the command bar. For the full details of IE7, check out Microsoft's Tour.

To see if you have Automatic Updates turned on:

          1. Click Start
          2. Click Control Panel
          3. Click Security Center
          4. Automatic Updates should be "ON" (Green)
          5. If it's Red or Yellow, click "Turn on Automatic Updates"

Tabbed browsing is the only way to go.. especially if you use the middle mouse button! single click to open links to new tab.. and single click on tab to close it. Its the only way to surf

Just downloaded it. Love the tabs!!! Still playing around with the other stuff.

DH is very resistant to change.

IE 7 has slowed my system down a tad however. Especially closing multiple Windows Explorer widows. It takes a second or two for the Status Bar to populate and won't close until it does. I still think Firefox is a little faster though and they tab functions are a little better (like undo close tab)

I've had IE 7 for several months now and it seems fine. Still prefer Firefox, but IE 7 is a definite improvement over IE 6.

BTW, not that it matters, but Firefox and Safari have had tabbed browsing for some time.

How funny that IE now has tabs!!
                      Good morning, son
                      In twenty years from now
Maybe we'll both sit down and have a few beers
And I can tell you 'bout today
And how I picked you up and everything changed
                      It was pain
                      Sunny days and rain
I knew you'd feel the same things...

couple of my friends downloaded and really couldn't stand how it would freeze their computer (new 1gb ram too) and cause complciations.

i enjoy the tabs on my firefox but once im sure they make a revision to IE7 i'll download it too
