  • [Question] Mine Ride Spiel

As much as I love the ride, the ride spiel has become cringeworthy. I don't think it's bad on paper, but the delivery and the laughably bad mine prospector impersonation the train conductors fail miserably at pulling off needs work as badly as the attraction itself.

So do they go the pre-recorded route a la Nature's Wonderland or do they just train better?

    Your thoughts??

I'm not a fan of the recorded spiel idea. It's a chance for the guests to listen to a real human and that's the only such interaction on any of Knott's attractions that I can think of. I'd hate for this to turn into a Ghost Host thing where guests know the recorded/repeated spiel so well that they "Rocky Horror" it with impersonations and yelling mimicry.

      Such a good point!!

I don't really want them to go with a pre-recording, I just hope they do a better job of training the conductors myself.

I wonder what the cost difference between using hourly employees vs. AGVA members onboard the trains would be.

I remember a couple of years ago there was a mine train op that had actually changed the spiel while we were riding it and it was actually pretty funny. I haven't seen that operator since then but I think he was on to something. Perhaps give the mine train a more "Jungle Cruise" jokes type attraction.

I went today and it was like the Theme Park Gods heard my cries.

The kid called himself 'Crazy Train' and he was brilliant.

Maybe there is hope and I was just having a very bad streak of train ops.

Yesterday, ride operator David was great. He spoke clearly with a great old west accent. My 12 year old son particularly like his comments as we passed through the cave with all the stalactites and stalagmites: "Some of those passages are so deep, we haven't even explored them all ... and we haven't discovered where all that strange music comes from. Probably it comes all the way from Disneyland, cuz they like that sort of thing there. "

I had a younger girl the last time I went on and it wasn't super great.

I really want to emphasize that my expectations aren't incredibly high either... The ride doesn't need A+ acting like the train robbers or the stunt show... The ride is great on its own, and will be even better when it's updated. It just can't be so bad that its destracting.

Truth be told, the past few times I've been on it, the ops haven't been that bad. Not especially good, just not 'ruin the experience' bad.

I don't know about the script itself, at times it's hard to hear the guy anyway, but I think it might partly depend on the driver's delivery. We went last week and ours was alright and was interactive with us. I can't remember if he was trying to do an accent or not.
