  • [Pictures] The Conservatory of Flowers

It was a golden afternoon in San Francisco when I went to Golden Gate Park to visit one of my favorite places in the city: The Conservatory of Flowers.

This magnificent Victorian conservatory is located just a short walk from the deYoung museum, and the new Academy of Sciences. The cost of entry is $5 (free on the first Tuesday of the month.) The Conservatory is closed on Mondays.

Inside, there are five different rooms (and climates, each more humid than the last.) These areas are: Lowland Tropics, Aquatic Plants, Potted Plants, Highland Tropics, and the special exhibit room which housed butterfiles during my visit.

Check out www.conservatoryofflowers.org for much more information on this landmark.

Beyond the stunning archetecture, and the over 2,000 plants inside, The Consrvatory is the best place to slow down, take a look around, and most of all escape. Once you enter through the front doors, the outside world vanishes. Troubles melt away. So sit back, relax, and enjoy the photos. Remember: you can learn a lot of things from the flowers.

Thank you for taking a walk with me.

Pratt55: Thank you. Depending on when you go, the butterflies are either plentiful, or, well, nearing the end of their stay. They're going to be doing night tours soon, so Ihope to be able to go back for that.

Olympicnut: Thank you. Yes nothing more pleasant than insect larvae squirming around in a flower that would make Georgia O'Keefe blush.

Thanks for the great photographs. The Conservatory is one of my favorite places in San Francisco, also! I wanted to see the "corpse flower" when it was in bloom(few years ago), but never made it!

Beautiful! Please answer a somewhat nonrelated question for me...I live in Southern California and want to take the train to San Francisco, specifically to go to the Academy of Sciences. Is non confusing public transportation possible?

Miapoepia: I heard about the corpse flower too, and am kicking myself for not going to see it.

seenoevil: The easiest answer to your question is found at www.511.org - it is a site for all public transportation in the SF Bay area. I use it quite frequently to plan little trips. I can not wait for the new Academy. My friends have been inside on a preview, and they gave a glowing review. I like the fact that the building itself is an exhibit as well.

Thank you Clara and CinderellaPrincess! I'm still learning the ways of the digital camera. There are some tremendous shots, taken by people with an incredible eye on this site, so I am definately inspired by what I've seen.
