  • News "Purebred and Home Grown": The Ventura County Fair Aug. 5-16

    Yeah, the parking's a hassle.

And yeah, it's basically the same fair that I've been going to year after year for almost 30 years now.

When I used to work full-time at the local radio station, we were given "mandatory voluntary" shifts at our booth, often times every day of the fair.

But after I took a few years off, I found out again how much I enjoyed a day and night at the Fair.

And I've met MiceChatters there, most notable Tom Chaney and Vic for one memorable day.

The theme this year is "Purebred and Home Grown".

I'd like to know if any MC'ers, be they LA types trying to beat the heat at a cool place like Seaside Park, or those who live up this way, would like to arrange a meet-up.

Here's the grandstand entertainment line-up (except where noted, acts are free with fair admission)

    Motorsports; Wednesday and Thursday, August 5 & 6, 6pm
($5 Adults, 12 and under free with paid adult)
Huey Lewis and the News; Friday, August 7, 7:30 PM
Josh Turner with Jake Owen; Saturday, August 8, 7:30 PM
El Chapo and Graciela Beltran with Venganza del Norte; Sunday, August 9, 3:00 PM
Gretchen Wilson; Monday, August 10, 7:30 PM
The Ultimate Doo-Wop Show; Tuesday, August 11,1pm
Rick Springfield; Tuesday, August 11, 7:30 PM
David Cook with Caitlin Crosby; Wednesday, August 12, 7:30
Good Charlotte; Thursday, August 13, 7:30 PM
Clay Walker and Lee Ann Womack; Friday, August 14, 7:30 PM
    PRCA Rodeo; Saturday and Sunday, August 15 & 16, 2pm and 7pm

Not a bad lineup. No Beach Boys this year, though. This is a fair the Beach Boys, even as presently constituted, should play every year. Mike Love said last year, they want to play this every year.

Wouldn't mind seeing Huey Lewis or Clay Walker. Love Doo-Wop (that's the big show for "senior day", ouch. American Idol fans: Note David Cook. If you wanted to go see him, I'd think about going with you.

    Fair facts

It's been called what the bigger county fairs around, used to be like.

Should I start another thread in meets and events? I might just do that, since the new posts function is on the disabled list for the time being.

I have to work (at the radio station) Thursday through Saturday nights, and Sunday afternoon...the first weekend, anyway.

i so very much miss the ventura county fair! by far a bazillion times better that what supposedly passes as the state fair here in Reno

i worked the ventura county fair a couple of years as yellow shirt secruity and it was so much fun, and they always have a couple of good concerts to see

as a side note, i think the Beach Boys are playing a show up here this week for Hot August Nights, but they'd still have plenty of time to get back to Vta...kind of a bummer they won't. i saw them at the fair in ventura years ago, was awesome
Will there be screams when the sun sets,

Sorry I wasn't able to make this. I went on opening day for a couple of hours, and meant to get back, but it just didn't work out. I hope you did get to go, and had fun.

Couldn't really find anyone else who wanted to go or that could go, so it looks like it won'e be working out for me, either. Thanks for reporting back, though.
