Sea Lions Mysteriously Disappear From Pier 39

Kind of interesting really. Wonder where they all went?

Perhaps they spotted a great white in the area?

Equally as interesting as their mysterious disappearing is how suddenly they first showed up on the pier after the '89 earthquake. I never knew that before and just figured they were always there since there are so many of them in those waters.

Re: Pier 39's Sea Lions disappear

According to what I've read, usually around 40 of them hang around while the others take off, but this time only around 10 of them have stayed. They think the sea lions are off following their a food source (their favorites are anchovies & sardines). It's the younger ones that have stayed behind. They also think the older ones have gone off to mating areas or whatever.

They believe the sea lions will be back in the spring.

It was kinda strange when we were there in the beginning of December. Just a handful of sea lions, wondered where they went and what might have happened. Sorry to see they haven't returned yet.

Re: Pier 39's Sea Lions disappear

I wonder if there's been a decrease of Sea Lions in Newport Harbor down here in Orange County as well.

For several years recently there has been a problem with Sea Lions in the Harbor hoisting themselves on to several boats in order to sun themselves and to rest. It got so bad that some of the larger Sea Lions actually were able to capsize smaller boats.

This turned out to be somewhat controversial because some boat owners put boards with nails sticking out of them to prevent the Sea Lions from coming on to their boats.

For the Sea Lions' sakes I hope their numbers have decreased in Newport Harbor as well.

Re: Pier 39's Sea Lions disappear

They found a few of the seals. Since the fishing has gotten a bit scarce here in the bay, they went south to Santa Cruz and Monterey where food is more plentiful. There is a new problem now though. 3 sea lions have been spotted with fishing lines around thier necks and mouths. The Marine Mammal Center has been trying to catch them since Saturday with no success. An update to the story can be found at : Search Continues For Injured SF Bay Sea Lions - cbs5.com

Aww, I hope they can help the sea lions. It's always sad when Man get's in the way of nature.

We should keep them away from that big trash island in the middle of the Pacific.

As a former Bay Area resident this is very sad to me, and I hope they can protect the sea lions from the fishing areas.
