  • [Question] A little Midwest Help (suggestions welcome)

Tink and I did the Northern AZ trip this year and it turned out amazing in part because of suggestions from other MC's. We've recently learned that next year we'll be heading from California to Missouri for a family visit. I'm planning on making a loop, Nevada, Utah, Colorado (detour through Nebraska to South Dakota for Mt Rushmore) Kansas, and Missouri. The way back I'm considering the Southern route through Arkansas to Memphis (gotta see Graceland) then Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona and finally back to California. What I am hoping for is any suggestions for fun things to see/do along the way. I have a little over 2 weeks to pull this off.

    So far I've got the following on the list;
    Vegas (brief stop)
    Dinosaur National Monument (CO)
    Glenwood Springs (CO)
    Fossil Highway (NB)
    Mt Rushmore (SD)
    Wind Cave (SD)
    Graceland (TN)
    Blue Whale (OK)
    Cadillac Ranch (TX)
    Carlsbad Caverns (NM)

So if anyone can think of other cool stops along that general loop please post. We'll be camping, but we'll stay in a few spots too. We've seen most of the Vegas and Arizona routes because of previous trips. The kids and wife haven't seen past there. I want it to be educational, but I also want it to be fun. As always I hope to post pictures but the trip isn't until 2012. For those who know me... I took my time and spent almost a year planning the AZ trip. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

If your going to be near Mount Rushmore you might want to check out Devils Tower National Monument. It has a nice campground which is at the base of the tower itself.
There is also a KOA at the entrance of the park and you can still see the Tower from there.
Of course it's most well known for the film Close Encounters of the Third Kind.
It's also the first National Monument established in the United States.

Another place of interest that might be a bit out of the way for you is The Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument.

That's off the top of my head.

How much of your two weeks will be spent visiting family? It takes me a couple days just to get to my sister's place in New Mexico.
