  • News Marching Through History 2011 at Prado Dam (Chino, CA)

Taking a cue from Prag I thought I would post this early in case anyone was interested in going. Tink and I will likely take the kids out to see it again. We did it last year! Hopefully this "gets the word out" and people can plan accordingly. It is a weekend event, open both Saturday and Sunday. Special thanks to Prag for encouraging me to say something BEFORE the event is held (2 weeks ahead) instead of just a TR after. I go into greater detail below but this is an amazing opportunity for kids.

    Date; Oct 1 and 2nd 2011
    Location; Prado Dam, Chino CA
    Event; Marching Through History
Cost; $10 a car to get in (event itself is free once in the park)
Website; Marching Thru History Exposition "An Educational Historical Tribute"

This is an event for anyone who is a fan of history, loves living history, or enjoys military strategy and equipment. It isn't limited to American military, or modern military. It is historical re-enactment stretching from Greek and Roman all the way up to modern day. You get a glimpse of camp life, you see how various items were made or prepared, and you get a brief schooling on strategy at that time. Last year the kids learned to write on wax tablets (paper was expensive in Roman times). They wore gladiator armor. They learned about the pike and the cross bow from the Ren crowd. They pulled rope with pirates, and watched an armorer make musket balls for Revolutionary troops. We watched a gatling gun being fired, spoke with cavalrymen (which was a personal moment since my great grandfather was stationed at Fort Dells) and talked with WW2 troops from various countries. They also had modern military demonstrations. We didn't explain to the kids what warfare was, we simply used this event as an opportunity to teach history. For anyone with parents or grandparents that are WW2 Vets this is a PERFECT opportunity to show them "what grandpa/grandma did". Here is my trip report from last year and a few photos to give you a taste of what this is like...

It does get hot out there so bring water. They do have vendors but you're welcome to bring food as well. This is also down the street from Chino airport. I mention that because Chino Airport has Planes of Fame as well as Yanks... both amazing vintage aircraft museums. The museums are not part of this event, and they do charge separate admission. I only mention them because of how close they are to the event. Here is the TR we did from when we visited Planes of Fame and Yanks. It might be worth it to head to the airport just to eat at Flo's... best food in the area!

It's this weekend for anyone interested. It's $10 a car to get in the park, the event itself is free. They will have all manner of souvenirs, food and drinks. Also plenty of demonstrations and re-enactment battles.

No clue if anyone made it out today. The event runs through tomorrow as well. I'll do a full TR later but let's just say the kids had a blast AND got to see a WW2 tank roll around and fire!
