  • Rose Parade 2012... T&T took the kids!

2 years ago Tink and I tackled the Rose Parade. At the time she was pregnant and we had 4 little ones who had never been camping. I'd bought a queen size air mattress and some food, and we just did it. Well that year the kids managed to pop the air mattress among other things. Let's just say it was a "learning experience". Last year we didn't go because the baby was too small. This year we wanted to renew the tradition. We banked on past experience and overall we had a lot of fun.

The first thing to remember is that the only 2 ways of getting decent seats are to either camp out or buy bleacher tickets. You can chance showing up the next morning but usually it's crowded by then.

This year we went with 2 air mattresses and a small spool for a table. Tink and I knew roughly where we wanted to camp and the kids had already been camping before.

The 4 got their own queen mattress, just like when we're camping.

Tink and Baby got the other queen. I stay up just to keep a watch on everyone.

    Morning!

She had a few hours sleep... not fully rested but at least a little sleep.

The nice thing about air mattresses is that they deflate quickly, and store easily. We already had the air mattresses and pumps from our camping trip. The blankets were older ones we've had for years. All in all a MUCH better experience then two years ago.

The rest are just random parade shots

I missed a few floats here and there. I had to switch out the camera batteries at least once.

The final shot is a shot of the beautiful mountainsTink and I had a wonderful time. I spent $20 on parking and felt that was actually a bargin. We arrived around 4pm on the 1st, left around 11am on the 2nd. My only complaint is that it the various police departments made it difficult for motorists to leave. Several freeway onramps were closed, several streets had one direction blocked, some streets were forced to merge into others, and no one seemed to have a clear map.Tink and I also learned to look for the blue "honor line" which would indicate which streets would be open and which would be closed allowing people to line up in the intersection. We hope to continue this tradition in the years ahead. I think this parade was "more crowded" due to the delayed Jan 2nd date. People were able to go to the New Year's Eve and then save the parade for another night... either way we had fun.Hopefully this inspires other parents. Tink and I have 5 kids, we did it, so can you! Research the event, plan, pack, and go... every kid deserves to do this at least once!
