  • News USS Iowa being moved to San Pedro CA Berth this Saturday 6/9

For anyone interested, the USS Iowa will be towed to her final birth this Saturday. She doesn't officially open to the public until July 7th, but this is a rare opportunity to see one of these giants moved in "open water". For anyone planning on going it will be crowded. The current plan is to start towing around 2pm, and bring her past Port's O Call to her berth as soon as possible (I've heard 330pm as a guess). She is currently berthed near 22nd St Landing, but San Pedro PD has her blocked off pretty good, you won't get close unless you have a reason to be in that marina. You can also view her from the surrounding hills (her tower can clearly be seen from Ports O Call). Even if you are a pacifist, this is a historic moment that you probably do not want to miss.

The internet has the story on how San Pedro finally won the bid. It's been a long couple years. You can follow the organization on Facebook and here is the LA Harbor PDF on the upcoming towing

I realize by posting this I am only going to make the place more crowded. That said I stood on the decks of the Missouri as a kid. I can't begin to relate the impact that experience had on me. This is a very rare opportunity to see this giant be moved, probably for the final time. If you're in the area I'd highly recommend coming down to see this.
