Groundbreaking Held for Rock 'N' Roll Park

    Thu Jul 13,11:35 AM ET

    Yahoo News

With rock 'n' roll music blaring and a sand sculpture of music legends as a backdrop, South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford walked off the Beatles' Magical Mystery Tour bus on Thursday and helped break ground for the Hard Rock theme park here.

The $400 million project is expected to add about 3,000 jobs to South Carolina's coast after the park is completed in the spring of 2008. Construction on the somewhat questionable investment begins just months after the beach town's most popular landmark, the Pavilion Amusement Park, announced it would close this fall.

The Pavilion had been a landmark for more than 50 years while other surrounding parks struggled to find success. Hard Rock Park developers said they won't follow the path of other failed ventures here.
"There's a big difference" with this project, Sanford said. "Money talks. ... These guys have the money in the bank." One of the key investors is Africa Israel, an international investment company run by diamond mogul Lev Leviev.

Sanford, Hard Rock officials and investors gathered in front of "Mount Rockmore," a sand sculpture of Elvis Presley, Bob Marley, Jimi Hendrix and John Lennon for the ceremony, using Gibson guitars with silver shovel heads to turn over the dirt.

    Sounds like a cool place.

I'll have to put it on my list of "things to do"!

    Thanks.

I read about the sand sculpture earlier. I'm hoping to find some pics online somewhere.

Haven't seen any yet, but hopefully there will be some online soon. I'm not sure it's going to succeed, but it will be interesting to see what they come up with. I was sorry to hear the Pavilion was going to close when they announced it. I'd been there many times.
Warning: Portions of this attraction are intense and may not be appropriate for younger children.

Wow, never even heard of this. Sounds like it could be a nice stop between Six Flags Over Georgia and Carowinds.
