  • Fernandina Beach (Ameila Island), FL Weekend Trip (Photos)

My family took a weekend trip to Fernandina Beach, FL, also known as Ameila Island, and I thought I would share that with you. We were visiting another local Mice Chatter EvilQueenRocks and we had a wonderful time!

Should you wish to see all the photos I took that weekend, please visit HERE.

We stayed at the Hampton Inn, right on the river and a block over from the historical downtown area.

The lobby was simply GORGEOUS, it had a nautical ceiling that overlooked a beautiful winding staircase. A comfortable fireplace with oh so cozy couches, I love the Laurel and Hardy statues, it was a wonderful added touch.

The boating theme even extended to the doors of the rooms!

The hallways however made me think I was in "The Shining," a little more decorations wouldn't hurt these creepy hallways.

Our room was lovely, very clean and the beds were quite comfortable.

We were very surprised and grateful that it came with a coffee maker, microwave and a refrigerator. Oh, and free internet!

In the morning they offered a free "hot" breakfast, which was really good as most of the town didn't offer many places to have breakfast except for a local "Shoneys," I wouldn't recommend eating at the Shoney's. LOL

The pool on the 2nd floor, with a lovely view of the river.

The historic part of town was quite wonderful, my mother and I kept saying that we felt like were in an old fishing village in New England somewhere, but with palms trees.

I'm a big fan of architecture, old buildings are kind of a thing of mine. Any interesting structure I tend to take photos of.

You see chipped paint, I see character. LOL

    Another view of the hotel.

We "believe" this was a ferry boat from somewhere.

The town was very industrialized in places, however I thought that just added to the charm.

I'm a collector of magnets, they are cheap, take up so little room and it's something I can display when I get home for people to enjoy. Everytime I go somewhere new, I pick up a magnet or two to commemorate my visit. Here are the two I got.

We took a trip on the East side of the island to check out the beaches. I have to say it's worlds different from the West Coast. The boardwalks leading to the water made for an interesting view and they had the best homes along the way.

They also have dunes! Reminded me of the dunes I used to climb in Indiana as a child, we just don't have these on the Gulf.

Look! I have my own beach! Now where's my money!

There were 2 major state parks on the island, Ameila Island State Park and Fort Clinch State Park. The road ways going through those areas were just beautiful, moss covered trees canopying the road. It was so peaceful and the one thing I commented to my mother was you couldn't hear anything! It was a nice welcome retreat for us!

On the last day we went to Fort Clinch (insert joke here), had a picnic and then checked out the Fort.

The fort was a massive maze of long hallways and rich in history. You could really feel what it was like for the soldiers who manned the fort and the energy surrounding the different areas was amazing. I highly recommend a visit to this location if you travel here, you won't regret it.

    The Barracks.

    The Jail

If you had a minor offense, they would stick you in this cell with a sign around your neck stating what you had done wrong.

    The Bakery

One of the MANY hallways that led to different parts of the structure. I am told the reason they made it that way so it would confuse the enemy and give them the opportunity mount an offense.

LOVED this room, the photos just don't do it justice. It was one of the 5 bastion towers (guarded corners) of the fort.

View from one of the Bastion towers.

    Supply Room

    Where they shoed the horses.

This gentleman was "working", I asked him if I could take his photo. He told me that I must be very strong to carry around such "heavy" equipment.

    Laundry Facility

    Powder Room

This was probably my favorite hallway there. It was like something out of a movie.

Again, my photos just don't do it justice. You really have to walk around this location to really get a feel for it, if you're into history, then this is a "must see" attraction.

And, it's right on the water.

We said our Goodbye's to the fort and got in the car to head home. Overall it was a wonderful weekend that I highly recommend to anyone that loves nature and history. Thank you for spending some time with my family.

    Have a Magical Day.

I'm glad you enjoyed your trip up our way so much!! And you even got a history lesson in the process. You took some really great photos of the fort. That fort is one of the reasons we moved to the island when I was 15. My parents took us on one of our many camping trips there and bought land one time to build a house on. I actually haven't been to the fort in years. I think its about time I took my girls.

Looks like a great place to visit.
We just spent 3 weeks on the Big Island of Hawaii instead of doing the Disney thing this year. I do want to go back to Florida again. I also want to check out this place. I love the pictures...... I love all the trip reports

                  Good morning, son
                  In twenty years from now
Maybe we'll both sit down and have a few beers
And I can tell you 'bout today
And how I picked you up and everything changed
                  It was pain
                  Sunny days and rain
I knew you'd feel the same things...

And actually, their huge 45th annual Shrimp Festival is this weekend. Half the island will be basically shut down for a weekend of 8 blocks of arts, crafts and food. They do it every year the first weekend of May....and after working in it for 10 years I avoid it like the plague. )

Jenn, it's worth going to at least once since you live as close as you do. I just worked on the main street that gets shut down for it and it was a big congested nightmare of people....kind of like trying to get out of MK during a parade but for 8 hours straight. ) And my daughter even has an art project on display from winning 3rd place at her school and I'm not going.
