  • Why no CORALINE presence at USH?

I'm late. I just watched Coraline on DVD this evening and the first thing that was a surprise was that it's Focus Features, which is owned by Universal. Then I asked myself... why isn't there more synergy going on the way Disney does?

Everywhere I look at Universal, I see things that AREN'T Universal property.

    -Marvel
    -Spongebob Squarepants
    -Shrek
    -Terminator
    -The Simpsons
    -Transformers (upcoming)

    Over in Florida:
    -Harry Potter
    -Men in Black
    -Twister

Universal properties that got kicked out:
    -Back to the Future
    -E.T.
    -Backdraft (eventually)

Ok so what am I getting at. CORALINE! A beautiful film that could be an amazing little dark ride for the theme parks.

Yah, you know... rides.. something that Universal is always lacking!

And then I think about the other family / animated movies that they have: An American Tale, Land Before Time, etc... and wow, they never done ANYTHING with those properties in terms of rides. Fievel got a playland which is insulting (now it's Curious George with the playground).

I know space is limited but the thing is.. I don't see Coraline ANYTHING at Universal Studios. Did I miss it? Am I late? Was there anything?

    Should there be?

    Your thoughts....

Absolutely. A cool Coraline dark ride could be Universal's answer to the Haunted Mansion.

I can't comment on Coraline, since I haven't seen it, but all studio parks have attractions based on properties from other studios, not just Universal. Although....

But there is indeed some bit of Coraline presence at USH. If you go to the prop museum, the "Universal Experience" is what they call it, there are 2 nice Coraline window displays. One is a kitchen, the other a theater.

I have photos which I'll put up later.

          That's a good man, Brand.

And thanks for the link, JtnOrl. I always remembered it as Warner Bros more for some reason.

I've actually not even seen Coraline yet but seeing as how it's on sale at TRU this week for only $9.99, I'll try to buy a copy.

As promised, here are some shots from the World of Coraline display at Universal Studios Hollywood.

Brand, your pictures came out way better than mine! Of course.. having it on the right white balance would help.

Since I came in here to post the same thing, I'll just do it anyway haha.

The other shots i took are unusable. I'm going to have to do this again.

And the point being... I was wrong. There IS Coraline presence at USH, but you really have to go out of your way to find it. I think it should be a little bit more than what they have.

I agree, a Coraline dark ride would be awesome at Universal. Perhaps it could have the trackless ride system of TDL's Pooh and Mystic Manor since it looks like Disney is never going to build a ride like that over here.

CORALINE - never heard of it. Could be part of the reason...

Totally understandable. But... if it was released by Disney, you WOULD have known about it wouldn't you. I think it's all about marketing and really putting it out there.

Nobody knew what Iron Giant was... and it's one of my favorite animated films.

I only really know about Iron Giant (I do remember it's release tho..) is because it was one of the only movies we had in our video lab for awhile so it was on loop constantly and we'd find ourselves just sitting and watching time to time. There have been some great Iron Giant photoshops of people over the years from that experience

Coraline is a beuatifully made film the storyline is a bit sloppy but it would make an interesting darkride.

I just do nto see Universal doing darkrides where peoplecould just sit and enjoy the environment without it having somekind of gimmick behind it.

NBC universals biggest mistake was to destroy the nicely built and elaborate E.T. attraction and replace it with the Mummy. A family ride replaced with something that only a select few can enjoy
