King Kong to rejoin Universal tours in 3-D

King Kong to rejoin Universal tours in 3-D - latimes.com

I can't wait to see if the 3D is better than Avatar and how real it will feel. This will also let us get an Idea of what the Transformers ride will look like.

How? Other than being in 3D, there's not a whole bunch in common.

^well the whole Transformers ride will be in 3D, so I'm guessing both King Kong and Transformers will be using the same technology so well see if the 3D is much more advance that Spiderman or just about the same.

I am not sure why we haven't been keeping up with the progress on Kong, the show building they are creating is massive.

I miss the animatronic King Kong!

I'll hold judgement until I see this in person but I fear the day when all theme park rides are just digital projections.

I agree. the one thing I love about the studio tour is that all of the events and effects are real. Real flames, real movement, and real (fake) animatronics. So unless the 3D is amazing I am most likely not going to be satisfied with it.

If it's a 3D/4D attraction like Spider-Man, with a motion simulator vehicle, it could be awesome. And if it's more advanced than Spider-Man...

It's a show building for the tram tour. You'll still be sitting in the tram, like with the old AA King Kong show. The tram will be jerked around by special devices on the floor of the show building, to simulate the shock waves of large beasts doing battle, but that's about it.

The only advancement over Spider-Man at IoA will be in the film technology. The trams are not as advanced as the motion simulators in Spider-Man.

It sounds impressive, but I'm not convinced that a 3D projection will be as exciting as seeing the "real thing", despite all the bells and whistles.

3D movies are commonplace nowadays, a giant animatronic Kong on the other hand, is something you can't see at your local multiplex.

Hearing that this will be 3D and some sort of 3D projections, I'm missing the old, animatronic, pre-fire Kong already.

Which version will this new revamped Kong be based on? Peter Jackson's?

one of the aspects of the tram tour is the 'movie making' aspect of the stops. Them showing you how the effects are used in a movie to create the effect you just witnessed. I'm curious what they could talk about with just 3-D maybe the 4-D effects... hope they don't drop that angle of the classic Uni Tram tours.

I'm not too sure about this. First, how will they distribute the glasses and make sure that the guests don't lose them during the tour? And how will they collect them after the tour? Seriously asking guests to hold on to them for the duration if the tour is asking a lot for some people.

Also I notice that the screens will be wrapping around the tram. 3D is great if you are looking straight at the screen but if the screen is all around you I would think that the scenes on the periphery of your vision would be blurry and the effect they are trying to acheive would be diminished.

Just design for that.. A screen showing nothing, or no 3D effect isn't going to distract you as its either not visible or just a regular picture.

I was envisioning something like a tunnel wall surface screen shape, not a ring of screens per say. But if you are looking out to the side of the tram... what is in your peripheral is the tram anyways...

I'd imagine they'll just add some sort of bins on the trams for the glasses. The bigger problem is going to be keeping guests from dropping them OUT of the trams IMO.

If this was in DCA, and Disney went from an AA figure to 3D, could you imagine the outrage? lol

Universal has not stated that the Transformers ride will be in 3D. They have said that it will use a ride system similar to IOA's Spiderman, but the two pieces of concept art for "Transformers", show guests in ride vehicles, definitly not wearing any kind of glasses. So I think it will be like Spiderman, but not the 3D aspect.

My mistake. The official "Transformers" press release does say that the attraction will "fuse 3D/HD media". But those renderings tell me that they don't mean stereoscopic 3D. In fact, it looks like it might feature actual, full size AA figures, for those of us burned out on stuff projected on screens and passed off as state-of-the-art theme attractions. In other words: we may get large scale AAs again, with the "Transformers" ride.

Ugh, I'm glad I read this. I am about to take my first trip to Disneyland/USH and was sad I was going to miss the "new" Kong. I don't care how good it is, if it's just a 3-d movie I couldn't care less. How sad that Kong no longer lives.

Well Se what they do, the ride sounds like it will cost WAY TOO MUCH, since the ride will bring people in but enough to make as much as it will cost to make a couple of those huge robots plus 3D. The ride would be way cheaper if it was just in 3D plus if they did it like Spiderman it would be just fine.

While I wish they had just rebuilt the original animatronic and plussed it somehow, this does make it seem like it might be something special.

Although they declined to discuss the price tag for the 3-D production, theme park officials said the cost would be more than six times the price of rebuilding the destroyed mechanical Kong.
So they're not choosing to take the cheap way out at least.
